Touchscreen game

Also called touch screen game, touchscreen kiosk game, interactive kiosk game, touch table game, multi-touch game

A touchscreen game is played by touching the screen itself: tapping, swiping or dragging with a finger. Phone games qualify, but in brand marketing the term usually means a shared screen in a shop or at an event, such as a kiosk, touch table or touch wall, that anyone walking past can play.

How it works

Wikipedia defines a touchscreen as a display that can detect touch input from a user, and credits Eric Johnson with the first finger-driven one, which he described in a 1965 article. At a brand installation the player walks up and taps a start screen. The rules fit in one line: tap the threats, answer the question, steer the token. Rounds are short; Data Defense, below, gave each team 30 seconds. Several people can play at once, on one multi-touch surface or on screens side by side: DHL's Smart Speed put up to four players side by side on touchscreens at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with scores mirrored on a big screen. Some tables also read objects placed on them, as Škoda's below does. The session ends with a leaderboard place, a discount code, a sign-up form or a QR code that carries the game to the player's phone.

Where brands use it

Retailers use touchscreen games to turn browsing into a choice. Coty ran a perfume quiz on in-store touchscreens and staff iPads in World Duty Free at Heathrow; Drimify reports 68% engagement on the touchscreen devices and an average basket 92% higher than that of normal Coty shoppers. Our retail gamification guide has more in-store games. Event teams put touch tables and kiosks on stands (see trade show booth games). Grubhub fixed trivia tablets into the tables of its Lollapalooza food court in 2021; a winning round unlocked a Grubhub discount code. Tech brands use touch to sell touch: Intel's Finger Bootcamp (2014) sold the speed of its tablet chips with games that answered only to fingers, never a mouse. When it fits

Choose one when your audience is already standing in one place with a minute to spare: a stand, a shop aisle, a queue, a fan zone. There is nothing to download, so it suits walk-up play, and a shared table turns strangers into a team. It works for lead generation at events and for product discovery in retail, where the answer sits on the shelf beside the screen. Throughput has a ceiling: Google's Racer table at Google I/O 2013, played with a finger on phones set down on marked spots, drew more than 650 individual players a day, Communication Arts reported. Keep the screen within a wheelchair user's reach; the US ADA Standards set unobstructed forward reach between 15 and 48 inches above the floor (section 308).

When not to use it

Skip it when the brief is reach. A station serves a few people at a time; for national scale run a mobile game, a playable ad or a QR code game that people play on their own phones. Skip it if nobody can look after the hardware all day. A shared screen also needs cleaning: the CDC lists touch screens among the electronics to clean and suggests wipeable covers. For a station nobody has to touch, choose a motion-controlled game: Jersey Mike's tour kiosks read hand and body movements instead. For a screen in the street, see interactive billboard. A touchscreen catalogue, configurator or store map with no goal or score is a tool, not a game.

Data Defense — Google Chrome (2023)

Agency: Red Paper Heart · Platform: Touch table and LED wall at the Bloomberg Technology Summit

Between sessions at the 2023 Bloomberg Technology Summit, up to four attendees gathered round a large touch table in a pop-up pavilion on the show floor. Each player steered a Chrome browser window, tapping and swiping away security threats that attacked file and service icons and multiplied as the clock ran. After 30 seconds the four scores made one team total, and top teams went up on a 20-foot LED wall.

Result: 600 games were played in one day at a summit with fewer than 400 attendees, BizBash reported: more games than people.

Make Every Km Count — Skoda (2023)

Agency: Borabora Studios, Pixelgalaxie · Platform: Touch-and-token tables in a touring exhibition in Lyon and Barcelona

At Škoda's Let's Explore roadshow, visitors tapped an RFID badge to start each station. At the centrepiece, up to four players stood round a touch table and steered physical tokens across Škoda Island, a map built from the scenery of the brand's TV campaign, uncovering hidden stories as they drove. Every station added kilometres to the player's own count and to a hall-wide total shown on the Odometer, an 8-by-3-metre back-projected tunnel.

Result: Škoda Spain reported that more than 8,700 people visited the experience over its four days in Barcelona, and that their interactions added up to a collective 2.7 million kilometres. The studio's project page describes the badge journey and the token game but publishes no numbers.

Find Your Perfect Body Spray — Space NK (2025)

Agency: Drimify · Platform: In-store touchscreens at Space NK's Oxford Street flagship

Screens set into the displays of Space NK's London flagship run short quizzes on beauty preferences, for body spray, lip colour or blush. Shoppers tap through a few questions and the quiz narrows a wide range of brands down to one match. That product sits on the display within arm's reach, so the session ends with something to try. The format was reused at Birmingham's Bullring.

Result: 14,000 shoppers a quarter engage with the quizzes, and the product-recommendation quizzes have a 75% completion rate, according to Drimify, which describes the campaign as always on.

FAQ

Is a touchscreen game the same as a mobile game?

They overlap. Almost every mobile game is played by touch, but it runs on the player's own phone. In brand marketing, "touchscreen game" usually means a screen the brand owns in a fixed place: a kiosk, a tablet on a stand, a touch table or wall. Some campaigns use both: Bilstein's stand game ran on a touchscreen and, through a QR code, on visitors' phones.

What are some online touchscreen games available?

Games built for phones and tablets play by touch, as do many browser games. Some brand installations live on online. Techniker Krankenkasse's Toxic Monster, first played with buzzers at gamescom, has a browser and mobile version with touch controls. Our Still playable collection lists more.

What is a touch table?

A horizontal touchscreen built into a table, so several people can stand round it and play at once. Microsoft's Surface table, later renamed PixelSense, shipped in 2008 and recognised fingers, tags and other objects on its surface; Sheraton put it in hotel lobbies. Brands now use touch tables for team games on stands, like Data Defense above.
