A TikTok effect is an overlay people add to a video in TikTok's camera: a sticker, a face filter, an AR scene or a small interactive game. Brands commission Branded Effects to appear inside videos people make themselves; when the effect keeps a score and sets a goal, it becomes a game.
How it works
TikTok's Effect House glossary defines an effect as an overlay, "including filters, stickers, and tools", that creators add to their content. A filter is narrower there, a post-processing overlay that sets a mood or look, though people say "TikTok filter" for any effect. You pick one from the effects panel before recording; it follows your face, body or room as you film.
Effects are built in Effect House, TikTok's free desktop app for Mac or PC, which opened its beta to all creators in April 2022. An interactive effect responds to the player: a tap, a face or body movement or, as in IKEA's game below, a spoken word. A game effect also sets a task, keeps a score on screen and ends the round; the recording becomes the post. Without a score, a goal or a prize, an effect is a camera trick, not a game.
Where brands use it
TikTok's 2021 guide to Branded Effects lists uses such as trying on make-up, adding a branded sticker or scanning an object; Mucinex, TikTok says, saw a 42.7% lift in purchase intent. Since March 2023 brands can also commission Effect House creators directly. A Branded Effect can take a trending-tab slot, pin chosen videos to its page and run with In-Feed or TopView ads.
Game effects are still rare in our library. The clearest is IKEA's, a retail game built for awareness; camera games on other apps sit under social and AR and VR. More often TikTok carries the talk around a game that lives elsewhere: creator videos about Marriott's Fortnite island reached 30M views there, says Marriott's Shorty Awards entry; see also brands in Fortnite.
When it fits
A game effect suits a short brief for people aged 13 and over who already film themselves: a seasonal push, a launch, a retail offer. Rounds are short, so the product should be the control or the joke, like IKEA's product names. Every play can become a video that spreads as user-generated content; a prize or a creator kick-off gives people a reason to post. Keep the build light: Effect House caps an effect at 8 MB and a 4-second load. Two routes reach people: a Branded Effect booked through a TikTok account manager, or a free Community Effect boosted with Spark Ads, which may not show brand logos without the owner's permission.
When not to use it
Skip an effect for data capture. Effect House's guidelines ban QR codes and links to outside websites inside effects, and only a Branded Effect gets a call-to-action link; a QR code game or another web game on your own site keeps the funnel. Skip it for children: TikTok's US terms bar under-13s, and under-14s in Florida, from the main platform, leaving them a separate Under 13 Experience. You also rent the camera: a platform can retire its effects tool, as Meta did with Meta Spark in January 2025; our AR lens page has the details. For a brief about time spent, a world inside Roblox or Fortnite holds people longer: see brands inside other games. If a score wins a prize, see sweepstakes and check the rules with counsel.
Examples from the library
The Swedish Test — IKEA (2026)
Agency: Ogilvy, Amsterdam · Platform: TikTok
The player opened IKEA's branded TikTok effect, faced the front camera and said IKEA product names out loud, starting with LACK and BILLY before harder ones such as SKÄMTSKÅL, ÖRFJÄLL and BJÖRKSNÄS. The effect scored each attempt in real time while a bar at the top filled. A strong score qualified for an IKEA gift card, claimed by showing the video or a screenshot of the final score at either of IKEA's two Dubai stores.

Result: Ogilvy Amsterdam's executive creative directors said, as quoted by Famous Campaigns, that players were spending "an average of over two minutes interacting with the brand".
Youth Is Calling — Adidas (2021)
Agency: TBWA · Platform: Nintendo Switch and Douyin
The core was a Just Dance routine on Nintendo Switch: an adidas neo track turned the count of China's school broadcast exercises into disco, and players followed it with a Joy-Con. On Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, a branded "Youth Is Calling" sticker filter ran with a dance challenge from 28 August to 3 September 2021 (Gamersky). Players mirrored the routine on camera and posted their run.

Result: In-store traffic rose 8% and sales 11%, according to the WARC case study. The work won a Bronze in the Games category of the 2023 Clio Awards.
Triangle Tracker — Doritos (2022)
Agency: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners · Platform: Snapchat and TikTok
Here TikTok carried the challenge, not the game. The game was a Snapchat lens: pointed at any triangle, from a street sign to a building, it turned the shape into a Doritos chip and dropped a code for snacks, merchandise or a shot at a $250,000 prize. On TikTok, weekly challenges asked people to find and film well-known triangle-shaped places, tagged #DoritosTriangleTracker and #Contest, for $15,000 bounties (Marketing Dive). The lens has since been removed.

Result: More than 4 million people turned triangles into Doritos and the campaign drew 3 billion media impressions, according to a portfolio case page; Marketing Shots puts the TikTok views at 42.7 million.
FAQ
How do you use TikTok effects on a video?
In TikTok's camera, open the effects panel, pick an effect and follow its prompt while you record: tap, turn your head, open your mouth or speak. In a game effect the score is part of the picture, so the finished video shows your result. Videos made with an effect also appear on the effect's detail page.
Is Effect House free?
Yes. TikTok offers Effect House as a free desktop app for Mac or PC, and its launch post says anyone can build Community Effects with it. Reach is what costs: a Branded Effect, the only kind that can carry a call-to-action link, is booked as a campaign through a TikTok account manager.
Is a TikTok effect the same as a Snapchat lens?
Close, but not interchangeable. Both are camera overlays that track your face or surroundings; Snapchat calls them Lenses, TikTok says effects. They are built in different tools, Lens Studio and Effect House, and Effect House publishes a guide to migrating from Lens Studio. Our AR lens page covers Snapchat.
