Copyright & Removal

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Every game in this library belongs to the brand that commissioned it and to the people who made it. We document the work; we don't own it. If something here is yours and you'd like it corrected, credited differently or taken down, tell us. Most requests end with a quick fix.

What we show, and why

A game page can include:

  • screenshots and video frames, each shown next to our text about the work;
  • our own recordings of the game being played;
  • short muted previews cut from case-study videos;
  • case-study videos published by the brand or agency, played from a copy in our own media storage;
  • brand and agency logos;
  • credits;
  • texts written by our editors;
  • links to the sources we used.

We show this material to document, review and discuss the work, the way an archive or a critic does. Each page names the brand and, where known, the studios behind the project, and links to its sources.

EU law has no general "fair use". For screenshots, frames, previews and our own recordings, we rely on the exception for quotation for criticism, review and discussion. This is set out in Article 5(3)(d) of Directive 2001/29/EC and Article 75(2)(h) of the Portuguese Copyright Code (Código do Direito de Autor e dos Direitos Conexos). The exception has these conditions:

  • the material was lawfully made public;
  • we name its source and authors on the page where we use it;
  • it stays clearly separate from our own work;
  • we use no more than the purpose needs, and never so much that it could replace the original.

A recording of a game is still the owner's game, so we treat our recordings the same way.

Case-study videos are shown whole, the way their owners released them, to document the campaign. We play them from a copy in our own media storage, so the page keeps working when the original moves or disappears, and so that watching a video doesn't pass visitors' data to a video platform. If a video is yours and you'd rather we removed it, or replaced it with a version you prefer, tell us and we'll do it.

We may sometimes get the balance wrong for a particular item. The process below is there for that.

Logos and trademarks

Brand and agency logos belong to their owners. We show them only to identify whose work a project is. Showing a logo doesn't mean its owner is affiliated with us, endorses us or sponsors the library.

Our own content

Our texts, our selection and our data are ours. You can quote them, crediting The Well Played Awards and, online, linking to the page. Search engines and AI systems may crawl and learn from our pages; see "Using the site" in our Terms of Use. The material described above belongs to its owners, so we can't license it to you.

Before you write

The brand itself commissioned much of the work here. Many of the images come from the agency's or studio's own case study. If you're at a brand or an agency, check with your colleagues or partners first: it may be material you published yourselves.

Who can ask

  • rights holders, or anyone authorised to act for them;
  • brands, agencies and studios whose work is shown;
  • people who are credited, named or pictured on a page;
  • anyone who believes something on the site is illegal.

What you can ask for

  • a correction to a credit, a fact or a link;
  • replacement or removal of an image, a frame or a video;
  • removal of a logo;
  • hiding or removing a person's name or image;
  • taking down a whole page.

Credits are a record of who made the work, so we keep them accurate. We'll fix mistakes. If you're a person named in a credit, we can hide a name you no longer use, or show your studio instead of your name.

How to ask

Use the Removal requests form, linked at the bottom of every library page, or email [email protected]. Please include:

  1. Your name and email address, and the organisation you represent, if any.
  2. The exact address of each page concerned. If your request isn't about the whole page, say which image, video or passage it's about.
  3. What you'd like us to do: correct, replace or remove.
  4. Why. Give the right you hold (copyright, trademark, image or privacy) or say what's wrong. Include enough detail for us to check, such as a link to the original work.
  5. A statement that you believe in good faith that the information in your request is accurate and complete, and that you're the rights holder, authorised to act for them, or the person concerned.

One request can cover several pages.

What happens next

  • When you send the removal form, the page confirms that we've received your request. We don't send automatic confirmation emails.
  • A person reads every request. Removals are never decided automatically.
  • We aim to reply and act within a week.
  • If a request is clear-cut, we may hide the material straight away while we look into it.
  • We'll tell you what we decided and why. Often a correction or a different image solves the problem. When removal is the right answer, we take the material off the site and delete its files from our public media storage within 14 days of our decision.
  • If we decline, we'll explain why and tell you how to challenge the decision.
  • If what we remove was sent to us by someone else and we have their email, we'll tell them what we removed, why, and how they can respond. We won't share your name with them unless it's strictly necessary or you agree.

Removed pages can stay in search engines' caches for a while, until they update on their own schedule. We also keep internal archive and backup copies of the library, including a locked archive of videos, so that a mistake or an attack can't destroy it. These copies aren't public. We never publish from them, and we'd restore a removed item only if we reversed our decision.

If you disagree

You can ask us to look again, whether you made the request or your material was removed. Reply to our message, or write to [email protected] within six months, and explain why. A person will review the decision. If the outcome was wrong, we'll restore the material or remove it, as appropriate.

You can also go to court. For questions about personal data, you can complain to the CNPD, the Portuguese data protection authority (see our Privacy Policy).

Misuse

We handle every genuine request. We may ignore notices that are clearly unfounded, abusive, or sent in bulk without the details listed above. If someone keeps sending us material that infringes other people's rights, we may stop accepting their submissions.

Archived copies

Some of our links point to copies kept by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. We don't control those copies. To ask for an archived page to be removed, contact the Internet Archive at [email protected].
