A Minecraft map is a custom world built in Minecraft and shared as a file, a Marketplace download or a server that players join. In the game, the word also names a paper map item. For brands and causes, a map turns a message into a place players explore, build in and return to.
How it works
The word has three meanings. In the game, a map is an item: crafted from paper and a compass, it draws a top-down view of the ground around you as you explore (Minecraft Wiki). Seed map sites such as Chunkbase show where a world's biomes and villages generate. The third is the one brands mean: a custom world, made by players and either sold on the Marketplace in Bedrock Edition or shared as files (Minecraft Wiki).
Players reach a brand map in three ways. They download the world file and open it in their game. They get it from the Marketplace, Bedrock Edition's in-game store, where content comes from official Minecraft partners and is approved by Minecraft's content team (Minecraft Wiki). Or they add an address to the server list and join a server, which keeps one world online for many players.
Where brands use it
Our Minecraft tag covers 13 projects, and charities, campaign groups and public bodies made many of them, often for awareness. Greenpeace Poland rebuilt the Białowieża Forest at 1:1 scale in To The Last Tree Standing. Rock the Vote walked young players through registering and voting on a server in Build The Vote, and NASA turned its Moon programme into Artemis Missions.
Commercial brands use it too. An insurer taught bushfire safety (finance), Sportsnet's Hockeyland was a paid Marketplace world, and a free hub map promoted A Minecraft Movie for Warner Bros. (entertainment). See also brands inside other games.
When it fits
Choose a Minecraft map when the audience is children and teenagers who already play, and the message is something they can do rather than buy: practise a drill, read, plant, vote. Sessions run long. Our records put a Climate Warriors playthrough at 30 to 45 minutes and Rooted Together at about 50, and Dare To STEM players averaged three and a half hours.
Schools are a channel of their own: Climate Warriors shipped free in Minecraft Education with a lesson plan and worksheet (Campaign Brief). Plan in months: Blockworks built it over eight (Campaign Brief), and the Uncensored Library took 24 builders three (RSF). Streamers carry maps to an audience, as a Twitch finale did for the Białowieża Forest (The Drum).
When not to use it
Skip it unless Mojang signs off. Its usage guidelines bar companies, agencies, non-profits, politicians and governments from using Minecraft gameplay to promote anything unrelated to Minecraft without prior written approval from Mojang or Microsoft; apply through a partnership proposal.
Skip it for purchase-led promotions: the guidelines bar server access that depends on owning out-of-game products, so an on-pack code can't be the ticket in. An on-pack promotion leading to a web game fits better.
Skip it for data capture: a server that makes money must make clear it is responsible for all end-user data privacy and protection, and with young players US rules such as COPPA can apply (FTC); check with counsel. For branded avatar items, compare a Roblox experience; for Fortnite players, a UEFN island.
Examples from the library
The Uncensored Library — Reporters Without Borders (2020)
Agency: Blockworks, DDB Berlin, .monks · Platform: In-game (Minecraft server and map download)
Players join the public server at visit.uncensoredlibrary.com or download the map, and arrive outside a domed library. A world map in the entrance hall shows press freedom in 180 countries, and each country wing holds books of articles censored at home, in English and the original language, which players can read but not edit. It opened on 12 March 2020, World Day Against Cyber Censorship (RSF), and it is still open.

Result: 20+ million gamers in 165 countries, 300k+ map downloads, 790 news articles and donations to RSF up 62% on a €0 media budget, according to the One Show entry. In March 2026 RSF counted over one million visits and 10 million book reads since 2020.
Climate Warriors — NRMA Insurance (2021)
Agency: Thinkerbell · Platform: In-game (Minecraft Marketplace and Minecraft Education)
Children aged 7 to 12 load a town inspired by Australian coastal towns and work through bushfire drills: rooftop sprinklers against ember attacks, building materials tested against extreme heat, helicopter rescues, and wildlife to save, among them Arlo the Koala. Production partner Blockworks placed close to 29 million blocks, and the map was released free in the Marketplace and Minecraft Education (Campaign Brief). It is still free to download.

Result: 500,000 downloads in a week, Insurance News reported in May 2021. Thinkerbell now puts the total at more than 6.7 million downloads.
Minecraft National Park — The Nature Conservancy (2024)
Agency: none credited (Mojang Studios with more than 50 creators) · Platform: In-game (Minecraft Marketplace)
The first map of its size built to benefit a charity, according to Minecraft, it marked the game's 15th anniversary and raised money for The Nature Conservancy. Players start in a visitor hub, then roam nine biomes from tundra to wetlands, each with a ranger station on local wildlife and a wildlife crossing. A community build challenge chose the park's main monument, an axolotl. The paid map sold until 30 January 2025; earlier buyers can still load it.

Result: $287,000 for The Nature Conservancy from net map sales, a December fundraising stream and a $100,000 donation from Mojang Studios, according to Minecraft.
FAQ
How do you make a map in Minecraft?
In Java Edition, put eight paper around a compass to craft an empty map, then hold it and use it. It draws the surface as you walk, and a standard map covers 128 by 128 blocks. For a full map, zoom out at a cartography table up to four times, to 2,048 by 2,048 blocks. Each zoom resets the map, so you explore it again (Minecraft Wiki).
Is the Minecraft map endless?
Not in Java Edition, though it is vast. By default its world border sits 29,999,984 blocks from the world's origin on each side, and a boundary at 30 million blocks remains even if the border is moved further out (Minecraft Wiki). Brand maps are far smaller: Climate Warriors is one town.
Can a brand build a Minecraft map or server without Mojang's approval?
Not to market something unrelated to Minecraft. That takes prior written approval from Mojang or Microsoft, and the usage guidelines list a skin pack containing brand logos and a world or characters from a movie built in Minecraft blocks among their examples of what is not allowed. Start with a partnership proposal, and check the current text with counsel.
