Objective
Warner Bros. needed to put A Minecraft Movie in front of Minecraft's own audience — more than 170 million monthly active players — without pulling them out to an external site or trailer. Marketing director Dana Nussbaum built the push around the game's own rules and rewards rather than a bolt-on ad campaign, betting that Gen Z would respond to something that felt native to the game rather than promotional.
Solution
Players open the Marketplace inside Minecraft Bedrock and grab the free content: skins of the film's cast, new pig-lin enemies and weapons, and a hub map called Game Over World, where the character Garrett dares them to beat his scores. From there they run three arcade challenges staged as scenes from the movie — an elytra race, a first-night survival, and a stealth pass through the Woodland Mansion — with each clear unlocking another character skin. For three weeks, a separate multiplayer server dropped players into the village of Midport, where they teamed up to repel waves of piglins across three modes, banked emeralds, and worked through six quests that unlocked one per day, finishing with a Yearn Cape that carried over into Java Edition.
Results
The film opened to $163 million domestically and $313 million worldwide on a $150 million budget — the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation, ahead of Barbie's prior record. It went on to gross $720 million globally within three weeks, more than $340 million of that in North America, reaching toward Minecraft's base of over 170 million monthly active players that the in-game rollout was built to tap.
- 1
Inside Minecraft Bedrock Edition's built-in Marketplace, the player picks up a free hero skin pack based on the film's cast and downloads a separate free map, "A Minecraft Movie DLC," playable solo or with up to ten people. Loading the map plays a set of studio logo splash screens before dropping the player into an arcade-style hub called Game Over World.
- 2
A character greets the player and lays out the hub's rule: only high scores earn rewards, not participation. Leaderboards display existing records for three activities, and the player picks which to enter while playing as Steve, since the hub's other characters start locked.
- 3
One activity is a survival mode in which the player fends off nightly waves of hostile mobs, crafting defensive gadgets between waves — turrets, area-damage devices, mob traps, timed explosives, and decoys — from beacon-lit resources, alongside melee and ranged weapons. Surviving more nights unlocks additional playable characters.
- 4
A second activity, Elytra Chase, is a timed flying race along a mountain course where the player dodges enemies and uses shortcuts and boosts; finishing under set time thresholds unlocks a character and a cosmetic skin.
- 5
A third activity, Mansion Stealth, has the player sneak past patrolling enemies to steal a crystal, using hiding spots marked with an eye icon and support items that push enemies back, shave time off the clock, or grant an extra life. Faster completions unlock a character and a cosmetic skin.
- 6
Outside the mini-games, the player can install a free add-on into an ordinary Minecraft world that spawns several new enemy types with their own weapons and loot, an effect that can be turned off with a craftable potion.
- 7
Separate add-ons introduce two new bosses with distinct attack patterns and a recipe book of new craftable weapons and items.
- 8
A limited-time multiplayer event server ran alongside the Marketplace content, dropping the player into a village under threat, where a character explains the coming attack.
- 9
On the event server, the player takes on repeatable activities — mining for loot at increasing risk and depth, escorting supply wagons between locations while fighting off enemies, and defending a wall against waves from a portal — earning currency to spend on gear and event-exclusive cosmetics at in-world shops. Quests released roughly one per day hand out further rewards, completing all of them unlocks a cosmetic cape usable outside the event, and the world's difficulty and content escalate periodically over the event's run.
- 10
Both the event server and the free Marketplace content have since been taken down, so the campaign is no longer accessible to new players.
