An in-game event is a time-limited happening inside a game people already play: a concert, a special mode, a challenge or a seasonal makeover, with rewards for joining while it runs. For a brand it means borrowing a game's crowd for a fixed window, usually around a launch, a premiere or a match.
How it works
You log in and the game has changed: a new mode in the playlist, a stage on the map, a countdown in the lobby. The event has announced dates, and taking part before it closes earns things you can't get later, such as a skin, an emote or a calling card.
Four shapes recur. A one-off live show: Marshmello played Pleasant Park inside Fortnite on 2 February 2019 to over 10.7 million players (Wikipedia). A limited-time mode, a temporary way to play. A challenge layered over normal matches. And a takeover, where a popular game is reskinned for a partner.
Platforms build this in. On Roblox, a creator schedules an event with start and end times; it appears on the experience's page, and players who tap Notify Me get notifications about it (Roblox Creator Hub).
Where brands use it
Film and TV studios time events to a release. Call of Duty ran five Squid Game modes with Netflix in January 2025, and Amazon MGM Studios put a Red One raid into the Roblox game Anime Defenders for three weeks in November 2024 (entertainment games).
Sport follows the calendar. The NBA brought a limited-time dunking mode to Fortnite as the 2021 playoffs began, and Mobil 1 ran Legend Vs. Leaderboard in Forza Motorsport, a monthly event where players chased a racing pro's ghost lap. Brands with their own worlds stage events too: in JBL's Roblox world, a race in the snow zone unlocked a short animated Martin Garrix concert. When it fits
Run an event when your audience already cares about a date (a premiere, a final, a holiday) and already plays the host game. The host brings the crowd, so the work goes into content, not distribution: FIFA's trophy reveal inside an existing Roblox football game logged 5.5 million visits in three days.
Plan in days or weeks. Verizon's stadium was Fortnite Creative's hub for nine days, Loot For Good ran for one week, the Red One raid for three. Give players something to keep, such as a skin or a calling card. Measure what the host can report (visits, sessions, minutes, concurrent players) and add a survey for intent or brand lift.
When not to use it
Skip an event if you need something that lasts: the Squid Game modes left Call of Duty on 28 January 2025. For a permanent home, build a Roblox experience or a Fortnite island.
Skip it for sign-ups and data. You are a guest: the host sets the calendar and the rules, and sells its own extras around your content, as Activision did with an event pass and bundles. A web game you own suits lead generation better.
Nor will a famous partner reverse a slide. Call of Duty's average Steam players fell 34.4% across January 2025, during the Squid Game event, after falling in December too (Steam Charts); coverage said the event alone did not explain it (Screen Rant). For reach alone, in-game advertising needs no build. If your audience watches games more than it plays them, a livestream game lets viewers take part from the chat.

5G Stadium — Verizon (2021)
Agency: Momentum Worldwide, R/GA · Platform: Fortnite Creative
With Super Bowl LV crowds limited by the pandemic, Verizon rebuilt Raymond James Stadium in Fortnite, and from 1 to 9 February 2021 it was Fortnite Creative's official hub. Players walked out to a field with a pirate ship hanging over midfield, then warped into five versions of the stadium, each with a mini-game such as a hoverboard race. NFL players and Twitch streamers played live matches there during Super Bowl week.

Result: More than 40 million visitors and 3.4 million live-stream views, according to Momentum Worldwide's case on The Drum. The One Show entry counts more than 2 million Twitch viewers and 1.5 million players of the stadium games, and the Webby Awards entry says Epic made Verizon the first brand featured in the game's Hub.
Loot For Good — Call of Duty Endowment (2023)
Agency: DAVID · Platform: Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 (DMZ mode)
From 1 to 7 May 2023, the charity's ask lived inside DMZ, the extraction mode. Every match in which a player got out with $30,000 or more of in-game cash counted: Activision Blizzard gave the Endowment $1 per qualifying extraction (Ads of the World), up to ten per player. The first extraction earned a Loot for Good calling card, a daily leaderboard ranked the week's top 100 earners, and streamers ran the challenge live.

Result: According to DAVID's Cannes Lions entry, the $1 million cap was reached in four days instead of seven, and more than 800,000 players took part, against a target of 200,000, across 40 million matches. WARC confirms the $1 million and an awareness gain of double the target.
Club World Cup Takeover In Super League Soccer — FIFA (2024)
Agency: Gamefam · Platform: Roblox
Instead of building its own world, FIFA moved into Super League Soccer, Gamefam's football game on Roblox. In November 2024 players found the Club World Cup trophy unveiled in the game days before its real-world reveal, with a limited-edition trophy item for sale. From 14 June to 13 July 2025 the game became a tournament companion: 13 of the tournament's clubs were playable and an in-game bracket updated with real results (GamesBeat).

Result: The trophy reveal drew 5.5 million visits and 70 million minutes of engagement over three days, and 84% of attendees said they planned to follow the tournament (GamesBeat). The 2025 takeover added 20 million gameplay sessions and 5.5 million hours of engagement, and in December 2025 the game became FIFA Super Soccer, FIFA's official Roblox experience (FIFA).
FAQ
What does "event" mean in a game?
An event is content that exists for a set time and then goes: a mode, a map change, a show or a set of challenges, usually with rewards that can only be earned during it. The battle pass in live-service games runs on the same clock: its content is typically obtainable only for a limited time (Wikipedia).
What was the biggest Fortnite concert?
The best documented is Travis Scott's Astronomical, held across several showings from 23 to 25 April 2020. Epic said it drew 12 million players on its opening night, at the time an all-time record for an in-game event (Wikipedia), and 27.7 million unique players took part 45.8 million times across the showings (Pocket Gamer).
Is an in-game event the same as in-game advertising?
Not quite. In-game advertising covers ads bought as media, such as billboards, video and rewarded ads, and integrations, where the brand becomes part of the game. An event is a time-limited integration: players get something to do, made with the game's owner, as Netflix did with Activision. It works more like a brand collaboration than a media buy.
