Objective

The NBA partnered with Fortnite to reach Gen Z and younger audiences during the 2021 playoff season. Timed with the launch of their global "That's Game" brand campaign, the collaboration aimed to drive engagement among younger sports fans through Fortnite's massive player base while promoting the NBA Playoffs and its teams.

Solution

The campaign consisted of three integrated components: First, an Item Shop release featuring 31 team uniforms (representing all 30 NBA teams plus one exclusive outfit) and team-branded cosmetics including the "In The Paint" set and character bundles featuring NBA stars Donovan Mitchell and Trae Young. Second, a five-day Team Battles tournament (May 19–23, 2021) with up to 15,000 players representing each NBA team competing on a leaderboard for V-Bucks and cosmetic rewards. Third, a Creative Mode experience built by Atlas Creative that included the NBA Welcome Hub—an interactive basketball-themed environment—and Court Crashers, a point-based gameplay mode where players launched themselves through obstacles to dunk basketballs into hoops. Notably, this was the first time Fortnite integrated video content into Creative Mode, featuring NBA highlight reels and buzzer beaters throughout the hub.

Results

The Los Angeles Lakers won the Team Battles Tournament during the NBA x Fortnite partnership, which ran from May 19-23, 2021. This marked the first instance of NBA content integrated into Fortnite's ecosystem.
