Dress-up game

Also called dress up game, dress up games, dress-up games, fashion game, makeover game, styling game, doll dress-up game

A dress-up game lets the player style a character, usually a doll or their own avatar, by choosing clothes, hair, make-up and accessories, often against a theme, a clock or other players' votes. Brands use it to let people try on a collection, a make-up range or a film's costumes.

How it works

The screen shows a character in the middle and a wardrobe around it, split into tabs such as tops, shoes, hair, make-up and accessories. The player taps or drags items on and mixes pieces until the look is done. Wikipedia defines the genre as games in which players customise a character's clothing, hair and make-up, and traces it from KiSS, a Japanese format for digital paper dolls developed in 1991, to the dress-up sites built in Flash.

A wardrobe on its own is a toy. It becomes a game when there is a goal: a theme to dress for, a timer, a score, a prize or a vote. Dress to Impress, a Roblox game released in 2023, is built on the vote: players make outfits and then vote on each other's. The payoff is a look to save, share, enter into a contest or keep wearing.

Where brands use it

Fashion and beauty brands fit best, because the product is the wardrobe. In Kingdom of Essentia, essence pays players with free avatar pieces that stay in their Roblox wardrobe, and Gucci has players dress a character in its Gucci x The North Face capsule before an endless run in Gucci Camp. Roblox names Fenty Beauty, Maybelline, NARS, Givenchy Beauty, NYX and L'Oréal among brands investing in avatar make-up. Film studios dress fans as characters (entertainment). Retail and food brands use outfits as the reward: Claire's ShimmerVille sold them for in-game currency, and McDonald's McWorld unlocked avatar gear with codes from Happy Meal toys. Both have closed. Many recent builds sit inside platforms, above all Roblox; our journal covers how brands work there.

When it fits

Use a dress-up game when the brief is about how a product looks on someone: a new collection, a make-up range, a film costume. It suits self-expression briefs for young audiences who already style avatars. In a Roblox survey of 1,545 Gen Z users aged 14 to 26 in the US and UK, published in November 2023, 56% said styling their avatar mattered more to them than styling themselves in the physical world, and 84% said they would be at least somewhat likely to consider a brand in real life after wearing or trying on its item in virtual spaces (Roblox). Plan for return visits: a look contest needs fresh themes and items. Givenchy re-dresses its house each season.

When not to use it

Skip it when the product's value can't be seen. A wardrobe shows how something looks, not how a fragrance smells or what a serum does; a trivia game or a personality quiz ending on a product match explains more. A bare outfit picker with no theme, score, vote or prize is a configurator, not a game; to get the product onto avatars, an in-game skin is enough.

Take care with children. The FTC counts animated characters and child-oriented activities among signs that a service is directed to children under COPPA, which requires verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information from under-13s (FTC); check with counsel. Critics fault the genre for narrow beauty standards, materialism and advertising real brands to children (Wikipedia), so offer a range of bodies and skin tones.

Beauty House — Givenchy (2022)

Agency: Like Fire and Collectif Exhibition (concept), The Gang (development), per Exhibition · Platform: Roblox

Players arrive in the gardens of a 16th-century manor and roam between a dancefloor for the Irresistible fragrance, a L'Interdit metro station, a runway and a make-up gazebo. At the make-up stations they act as make-up artists on their own avatar, then walk the catwalk while other players vote, and the top three take the podium. Quests pay out free Givenchy accessories such as the Le Rouge cross-body bag, and the house is re-dressed each season.

Tutta La Frutta — Tutta La Frutta (2016)

Agency: Pixeloide Studios, Buenos Aires · Platform: App

Made for a girls' swimwear brand, the app started with the player building her own avatar. She then worked through a designer's checklist: a one-piece or a bikini, the cut, the colours and prints, and a location for the photo shoot. Posing the avatar published the finished look to the brand's community feed, where members voted on each other's designs. The most-voted designers each month won prizes, a reason to come back. The app is no longer available.

Wicked RP — Wicked (2024)

Agency: Sawhorse Productions · Platform: Roblox

Built for Universal's Wicked films, the experience enrolled players at Shiz University. They set a name, pronouns and a bio, then dressed their avatar in free costume-inspired items from the film to play Elphaba, Glinda or a character of their own; a fashion game came in a later update. From campus they attended classes, levelled up a Best Friends meter with other players and could buy cinema tickets through Fandango without leaving. The experience has since closed.

Result: The Shorty Awards entry lists over 10.6 million visits, 5.4 million unique players and $226,000 earned from in-experience content, reinvested in the game. It also states that 31% of young female moviegoers on the film's record opening weekend had interacted with Wicked RP.

FAQ

What are some good dress-up games?

Mattel's Barbie Fashion Designer (1996) let players design clothes and print them to dress real Barbie dolls; the National Videogame Museum calls it the first commercially successful game made specifically for girls. On Roblox, Dress to Impress passed six billion visits by 2025, according to Vogue as cited by Wikipedia. Among brand games, Givenchy's Beauty House is still open on Roblox.

How do you play a dress-up game?

Pick or create a character, open the wardrobe tabs and tap or drag items onto it: clothes, shoes, hair, make-up, accessories. Most games give a reason to finish, such as a theme, a timer or a vote. Then save the look, share it, enter it into a contest or, in avatar games, keep wearing it.

Where can I find old dress-up games?

A lot of dress-up classics of the 2000s ran on Flash. Adobe stopped supporting Flash Player on 31 December 2020 and began blocking Flash content on 12 January 2021 (Adobe), so many no longer run in a browser. Most case pages in our library say whether the game can still be played, and the still playable collection lists those you can open today.
