Cooking game

Also called cooking games, kitchen game, restaurant game, cooking simulator

A cooking game is a video game in which preparing food is the main thing you do: chopping, cooking, assembling and serving dishes, often against a clock. For a food brand it puts the product itself in the player's hands, and the same kitchen loop can teach a recipe, a job or a money skill.

How it works

Wikipedia's category for the genre takes in games where simulating cooking or preparing dishes is integral to play. Most follow one of two patterns. In step-by-step games such as Cooking Mama (2006, Nintendo DS), each task in a recipe, from chopping to frying and plating, is a mini-game that usually lasts under ten seconds, and a good score can earn the dish a bronze, silver or gold medal. In time-management games, orders queue up while the clock runs: Diner Dash (2005) has you seat, serve and clear tables before customers lose patience, and in Overcooked (2016) up to four players share a kitchen whose layout changes every level. Brand versions add a payoff: a star rating, a leaderboard or real food.

Where brands use it

Restaurant chains are the natural users: their product is made to order, and the game can make it the same way. In food and drink, Domino's, KFC and Chipotle have all put players behind the counter, and Pizza Hut's Roblox world The Hut has players catapult ingredients at giant pizza bases to make one together (Iris). Employers use the kitchen as a job preview. Public bodies and charities borrow it too: Hong Kong's government ran a food-truck cook-off that quizzed players on the Basic Law, and Mission: Hunger put a community kitchen on Roblox for New York Common Pantry (Good Good Good). Some are filed as simulation games; see our fast-food collection.

When it fits

Pick a cooking game when the product is prepared, not unwrapped: pizza, burritos, noodles, fried chicken. Making it is the message. Domino's built Pizza Hero because many consumers found its pizza-making a mystery (The One Show). The kitchen also works as a classroom: KFC's VR game supplements the certification programme for its nearly 19,000 US cooks (KFC). Close the loop where you can, with an order button, a voucher or a job application. Match session length to the channel: an assembly round suits a quick drop-in; a management story such as Neohaven Noodles ran past 90 minutes, saved between visits.

When not to use it

If the product is eaten straight from the pack, a kitchen shows a process that isn't yours; a match-3 board or an arcade game with the pack in play may carry it better. Mind the audience. Portals such as Kizi file cooking games next to dress-up and kids' games, and in the UK, since July 2017, ads for food high in fat, salt or sugar may not run in children's media or where under-16s make up more than 25% of the audience, advergames included (ASA). Check with counsel; for US children's data, see COPPA. For leads in one visit, a personality quiz or prize wheel is faster: oven maker Ooni used both, and Playable reports a cost per lead 20% below Ooni's benchmark for non-gamified lead-generation campaigns.

Pizza Hero — Domino's (2011)

Agency: CP+B, UNIT9 · Platform: iPad app

Players stretched dough with a fingertip, swirled on sauce, tapped on cheese and toppings, then slid the pie into the oven. Pizza Prep School taught the moves; then orders arrived, soon two or three at once, each rated in stars by a Domino's chef. A Make An Order button let players order the pizza they had built; from April 2012, those who finished the training missions were encouraged to apply for a job. The app has since been pulled.

Result: More than 300,000 downloads and number three on the App Store; players made more than 7 million pizzas, and almost 800 of them went on to work at their local Domino's, according to UNIT9.

The Hard Way — KFC (2017)

Agency: Wieden+Kennedy · Platform: VR (Oculus Rift)

In a Rift headset with Touch controllers, the player is locked in Colonel Sanders' secret training kitchen while a talking portrait of the Colonel directs and heckles. Escape means cooking a batch of Original Recipe chicken by hand in five steps: inspecting, rinsing, breading, racking and pressure-frying. Time-lapse squeezes the real 25-minute process into about ten minutes. Built for cook training, it later went on the Oculus Store and is still listed on Meta's store for PC VR.

Neohaven Noodles — National Citizen Service (2025)

Agency: Preloaded · Platform: Web

Made to teach 15- to 17-year-olds about money, the browser game hands players a noodle shop in the near-future city of Neohaven for ten in-game days. They cook and serve bowls, buy ingredients and handle trouble with customers and neighbours. When cash runs short, a loan shark offers help, turning interest and bad debt into a live problem. Choices lead to different endings. The game can no longer be played.

Result: Almost a quarter of a million participants in just over two months, according to the UK government's evaluation of NCS, which notes that no impact surveys were run with people who took part online.

FAQ

Is a cooking game the same as a restaurant game?

They overlap. A cooking game centres on preparing food; a restaurant game such as Diner Dash, which Wikipedia calls a time-management game, centres on serving customers fast. Overcooked combines both: preparing, cooking, serving and cleaning up under a clock. When the player runs the business itself, the game is closer to a tycoon game.

Can a cooking game sell real food?

Yes, if the reward leaves the game. Pizza Hero's Make An Order button sent the pizza you built for delivery. Chipotle gave the first 100,000 Roblox players to roll a burrito in Burrito Builder enough Burrito Bucks for a free entrée code (Chipotle); The Meta Key reports they went in 30 minutes.

What are the best-known cooking games?

Cooking Mama is the classic: by January 2008 the series had sold more than 2.6 million copies worldwide, according to Wikipedia, which also calls Diner Dash one of the top-selling downloadable games of all time. Overcooked made the kitchen a four-player co-op. Branded ones come and go with campaigns; our fast-food games article covers the chains.
