Objective
New York Common Pantry needed to reach donors and volunteers during the year's biggest giving season, with the added urgency that roughly one in five American children face hunger. Rather than run another appeal on a donation page, the nonprofit and The Purpose Group went to the platform where most US kids under 16 already spend their afternoons, turning gameplay itself into the ask for money and time.
Solution
Up to 20 players share a virtual community kitchen with one job: help serve a million meals. Players cycle through three stations — STOCK UP, where they restock shelves with ingredients; COOK UP, a timed meal-prep challenge; and SERVE UP, where finished meals go out to a line of NPC guests. Between shifts, players can stop and talk to those guests, whose AI-driven dialogue shares real stories about food insecurity. Every meal served ticks up toward the million-meal goal and a matching real-world donation, and in-game prompts send players and their parents to NYCommonPantry.org to give money or sign up to volunteer.
- 1
The player enters Mission: Hunger, a free Roblox experience for up to 20 players, and spawns inside a virtual community kitchen that serves as the game's single setting.

- 2
An on-screen mission frames the session: help address child hunger this holiday season by serving 1 million virtual meals, which unlocks real-world donations to New York Common Pantry.
- 3
The core loop runs through three linked mini-games: players restock kitchen shelves with ingredients, prep meals in a timed cooking round, then serve the finished holiday meals to NPC guests.
- 4
Between rounds, players can approach NPC guests for side conversations; each guest has an AI-driven backstory drawn from a real experience of food insecurity that explains a root cause of hunger in the US.
- 5
Every meal served counts toward the shared one-million total and unlocks a real-world meal donation to New York Common Pantry, making the reward loop a literal donated meal rather than points.
- 6
Progress is tracked on a leaderboard that ranks meals served and dollars donated, in place of combat scoring, and lived on the campaign site missionhungergame.com.
- 7
Players who want to contribute beyond gameplay can put Robux, Roblox's in-platform currency, toward an additional real-world donation.
- 8
The experience also links out to NYCommonPantry.org for non-gamers or players who prefer to act offline, offering direct paths to a cash donation or in-person volunteering.
