Badges and achievements

Also called achievement badges, gamification badges, achievements, digital badges, trophies, game achievements

Badges and achievements are rewards a game gives for reaching a stated goal: finish a level, collect 100 items, win 20 times. Each one appears as an icon on the player's profile. For brands they are cheap to add, give people reasons to explore and come back, and count exactly how far players got.

How it works

The game shows a list of goals, often as greyed-out or locked icons. Meet the goal and the icon lights up, a pop-up announces it, and the badge stays on your profile, in a passport or in a trophy case friends can see. Some goals stay secret until earned. Wikipedia calls an achievement a meta-goal defined outside a game's own parameters. In practice the achievement is the goal and the badge is the icon you get for it. Google Play Games Services sorts achievements into three kinds: standard (earned in one step), incremental (earned by gradual progress) and hidden. It suggests incremental targets that take at least ten sessions. Some platforms publish the tally: Steam shows what share of a game's players holds each achievement.

Where brands use it

On Roblox every experience can award its own badges, and brands use them as a quest list: Pizza Hut's The Hut gives one for collecting ingredients, clearing each obstacle course and baking pizzas. Food and drink chains tie them to the menu: McDonald's UK and Ireland gave a digital badge for each daily Side Mission in its app. In recruitment, the U.S. Air Force's Airman Challenge promoted players through real Air Force ranks and badges, each explained in plain terms (Gamification.co). PlayStation turned its platform trophies into a currency: in Bid for Greatness players bid their gold trophies on items from its Greatness Awaits film and kept the trophies afterwards (PlayStation Blog). When it fits

Badges suit a campaign with breadth: many levels, cities, products or episodes worth seeing beyond the first. Tie each badge to part of the brand, such as a destination, a menu item or a character, and the set becomes a map of what to explore. They need somewhere that remembers the player: an account, an app, a Roblox profile. Badges also measure. Roblox shows how many players have won each badge, so the set reads like a funnel: on Pizza Hut's game page, by October 2026, 100,086 players had won the badge for collecting ten ingredients and 16,517 the one for making a first pizza. A 2013 study of Stack Overflow found people step up the rewarded activity as they near a badge, more strongly the closer they get.

When not to use it

On their own, badges are not a game, and our library does not list them: a badge for opening an app or sharing a post is gamification. Skip them for one-off sessions, such as a QR code game on a pack, where few players return; an instant win game rewards the first play. Don't expect the effect to outlast the badge: for the two voting badges in the Stack Overflow study, voting fell almost to its old level once the badge was won. Plan the next goal or a daily reward before then. Keep most badges within reach: Pizza Hut's Head Chef, for 30 pizzas, had been won by 19 players. A real prize on a badge makes the campaign a promotion with rules, like a sweepstakes; check with counsel.

Traveling The World — Air France (2014)

Agency: KRDS · Platform: Web

Players opened a personal passport and stepped into Google Street View, starting in cities on their home continent. Each city set tasks on its real streets: photograph a landmark, beat a countdown, name a city from a postcard clue, find a hidden code. Cleared tasks stamped the passport and earned badges, 18 in all, which opened bonus challenges released week by week. Tasks on all five continents entered players into a draw for a round-the-world Air France trip.

Result: 100,000 users completed 1,285,000 challenges between them, 4,200 finished all 157 and the average total time per user was 31 minutes 20 seconds, according to agency KRDS.

Snack! In The Face — KFC (2013)

Agency: DT & Ogilvy · Platform: App

In this free catapult game from KFC Australia, players flung popcorn chicken across 18 levels in three villain-themed lairs into Colonel Sanders' mouth. Clearing levels and daily challenges earned stars and achievements, which unlocked any of 25 rewards, from $1 off to a free menu item, as mobile coupons for KFC's 600 Australian stores. Between 2pm and 5pm a daily challenge gave away free snacks, and unwanted coupons could be gifted to Facebook friends.

Hyskor Run — Netflix (2023)

Agency: none credited · Platform: Roblox

Netflix built this Roblox game for the film Spy Kids: Armageddon. Players train in the Sim Gym, then race up to seven rivals past traps, skeletons and the Heck Knight to King's Platform, grabbing Byte drives that unlock spy gadgets. Matches run against the clock or as last-one-standing Survival. Six badges sit on top of the runs, from Data Runner, for collecting 100 Byte drives, to Spy Royale, for 20 wins. The experience is still playable on Roblox.

FAQ

What does it mean to earn a badge?

It means you met a goal someone set and the system recorded it. In a game, the badge proves progress in that game. In education and HR the word has a stricter sense: the Open Badges standard from 1EdTech packages who earned a badge, who issued it and the criteria, sometimes with evidence, signed by the issuer as a verifiable credential. Badges in brand games are not credentials.

What are game achievements?

Game achievements are goals set on top of a game's own objective and tracked by the game or the platform. Xbox 360 brought in a system across all its games, with a running Gamerscore, in 2005; Valve added achievements on Steam in 2007 and Sony brought trophies to PlayStation 3 in 2008, Wikipedia records. Players see them on a profile that follows them from game to game.

How do Roblox badges work for a brand?

The developer creates a badge with an icon and a description, and a script awards it when a player meets the goal. Each experience gets five free badges a day; extra ones cost 100 Robux each. Earned badges go into the player's inventory and enabled ones are listed on the experience page (Roblox). The page also shows how many players have won each badge, so competitors can read it too.
