A daily reward, or daily login reward, is a prize a game or app gives once a day for coming back: a bonus, one spin, a short challenge or a new door to open. Brands use it to turn a campaign into a habit, giving people a reason to return every day for weeks.
How it works
The player opens the app, site or game and finds today's reward waiting: a tile to tap, a calendar square, one spin or a short challenge. Claiming it pays points, currency, a coupon or a prize-draw entry, and the offer then locks until tomorrow. Some designs count a streak: in Warframe's original login rewards, one day offline reset the counter to 1, and rarer items came into the pool from day 7. Others count total days: Warframe's Daily Tribute, which replaced them in December 2015, does not penalise missed logins. A 2025 study by HwiJoon Lee, Kashif Imteyaz and Saiph Savage found daily login rewards in 38 of the 40 most popular Korean mobile games and linked them to loss aversion (arXiv).
Where brands use it
In the library, daily rewards serve engagement and loyalty briefs and often sit inside channels a brand already owns: apps, loyalty accounts and subscriber logins. Food and drink chains use them often. Burger King's Balloon Burst reset once a day for Royal Perks members, and McDonald's UK and Ireland opened a new pixel-art mission in its app each day of Side Missions in summer 2025. In telecoms, SFR gave subscribers one go a day. Fashion retailer BFL locked each game in its Smile More app after one play and reopened it the next day; Drimify reports that replays doubled against the brand's previous platform. In December the same idea becomes an advent calendar. More in our loyalty collection.
When it fits
Use a daily reward when the brief is retention, a habit built over weeks rather than a spike on one day: opening the app every morning, keeping a loyalty account active. It needs a channel that can call people back (push notifications, SMS, email, a logged-in account) and ideally a product with a daily moment. KFC tied its challenge to the 2pm to 5pm sales slump; McDonald's nudged Side Missions players with time- and location-based prompts such as a morning coffee run. A daily cap keeps prize costs predictable: 2degrees allowed one prize per day, per customer. Set an end date; Side Missions ran from 14 July to 10 August 2025.
When not to use it
Skip it for one-off contact, such as a trade-show stand, a DOOH screen or a playable ad; for a prize in a single visit, an instant win game suits better. Don't promise daily visits: Millsberry paid a daily login bonus, yet its average young visitor came 2.8 times a month. Avoid streaks that punish a missed day. A 2013 paper by game researchers José Zagal, Staffan Björk and Chris Lewis lists "playing by appointment", where the game decides when people play, as a dark pattern when missed sessions cost progress, and Duolingo says a broken streak can feel demotivating. For children, the UK Children's Code counts reward loops among "sticky" features and asks for breaks without lost progress. Daily draws need sweepstakes terms; check them with counsel.
Examples from the library
Snack! In The Face — KFC (2013)
Agency: DT & Ogilvy · Platform: App
KFC Australia's first branded app was a catapult game: players flung popcorn chicken across 18 levels into the Colonel's mouth. Stars and achievements earned rewards, from a $1-off coupon to a free menu item. The main daily challenge opened between 2pm and 5pm, a slow time for KFC sales: land five pieces in 60 seconds to win a free-snack coupon, with 2,500 snacks to win a day across 600 stores.

Result: With no TV support, the app raised sales of snacking products by 12.25% and total business by 2%, and became Australia's number one app, according to the Silver-winning Australian Effie case summarised by WARC in September 2014.
Data Piñata — 2degrees (2022)
Agency: TBWA New Zealand, designed and built by its Digital Arts Network, with Unbound as technology partner for the 2023 Armada season · Platform: Mobile web
New Zealand telecom 2degrees made free mobile data the prize. Players opened datapinata.nz, picked a whacker and searched through the phone's camera for an augmented-reality piñata to smash; 2degrees said the piñata that appeared depended on location, weather, date and time of day. Anyone could play, but only 2degrees customers could claim data. Under the 2024 terms, each customer could win one prize per day, and a data prize expired 24 hours after the win.

Result: In the first summer, three million piñatas were whacked and more than 280,000 people won more than four million hours of data, 2degrees reported. After three years, Digital Arts Network counts 816,000 players and 5 million hours of free data given away.
Millsberry — General Mills (2004)
Agency: not credited · Platform: Web
Children signed up free, built an avatar called a Buddy and explored a cartoon town. They earned Millsbucks in branded mini-games such as Lucky Charms Charmed Life, bought food at the town's grocery store, fed their Buddy branded cereal to keep it healthy and decorated its house. A daily login bonus of Millsbucks rewarded each return.

Result: Yale's Rudd Center reported in 2009 that the site averaged 767,000 unique young visitors a month, who stayed nearly 24 minutes per visit (Yale News). The average young user came 2.8 times a month, TIME added: regular, but far from daily.
FAQ
What is a daily login reward?
A bonus for opening a game or app on a given day, claimed with one tap: coins, points, an item or a coupon. Some grow with the streak; in Warframe's original system, rarer items became possible from day 7. Brand apps more often pay in loyalty points, vouchers or prize-draw entries.
Do daily rewards reset if you miss a day?
Only if the designer built a streak, as in Warframe's original login rewards. Their replacement, Daily Tribute, counts total days, so a break costs nothing. Brand games such as Balloon Burst and Data Piñata worked day by day: a player who missed Monday could play again on Tuesday.
Is a daily reward the same as a streak?
No. A daily reward pays for one day's visit; a streak counts days in a row and can carry its own prize, while some games reward a running total of days instead. SPAR's Winter Wins gave one daily play of Ice Breaker plus a bonus spin-to-win wheel after three daily plays. Duolingo softens its streak with a Streak Freeze that pauses it for a day.
