Objective
New Zealand's summer mobile market fills up with Christmas discount offers every year, and 2degrees wanted a way to stand out without joining another price war. Instead of cutting rates again, it turned free mobile data into a game prize: anyone can play regardless of carrier, but only 2degrees customers can claim what they win, while switchers get their full winnings plus a 7.5GB bonus for moving over. Daily prizes that expire after 24 hours also give players a reason to keep coming back for the whole summer.
Solution
Data Piñata runs as a mobile website, not an app: players open datapinata.nz on their phone and confirm their number with an SMS code to get in. In the current season, Data Piñata Battle, they first build a piñata of their own — naming it and choosing its colour, armour and whacker weapon — then send it into battle for loot and challenge friends to head-to-head fights, earning data with every match. Once a day, players get a shot at a prize draw, and anything they win lands in the 2degrees Data Clock app to redeem before it expires 24 hours later. Earlier seasons played more like a treasure hunt: players picked a whacker weapon, pointed their phone's camera at the sky, and searched in augmented reality for Polly the giant pink piñata, then a whole 'Armada' of 20-plus named piñatas that appeared in different places at different times.
Results
Season 4 drew more than 100,000 players in its first week alone — the biggest launch in the game's history. Across its first three seasons, Data Piñata reached 816,000 players and gave away 5 million hours of free mobile data through 22 collectible piñatas. The 2022 Armada season alone saw 3 million piñatas smashed and more than 280,000 winners share over 4 million hours of data (the equivalent of 200,000 days), backed by a brand pledge to give away up to 800 years of accumulated data; the debut season logged 12 million in-game whacks.
- 1
The player opens the Data Piñata Battle site on a phone, enters and confirms a mobile number, accepts the terms, and enters a 6-digit code texted by 2degrees to reach the game; the game then requires device permissions to proceed.
- 2
The player builds a personal piñata, choosing its color, giving it a name, fitting it with armour, and picking a fighting whacker as its weapon.
- 3
Between fights, the player collects loot to add to their piñata's set of items.
- 4
The player challenges friends to a piñata battle; losing still awards 30 minutes of full-speed data, while winning awards a random prize worth more than 30 minutes.
- 5
Prizes can include limited-run physical items such as a retailer voucher, a sports jersey, or a brand voucher, though only one prize is won per day and only one physical prize across the whole promotion.
- 6
Players who assemble every item in the Battle Collection earn a bonus of 3 days of data.
- 7
Won data is claimed through the separate Data Clock app, arriving instantly or within 36 hours, and must be activated within 24 hours or it expires.
- 8
Players who are not 2degrees customers can still play and accumulate winnings, but must switch to 2degrees to redeem them, at which point they receive everything banked plus a 7.5GB carryover bonus.

In earlier seasons the game was an AR hunt: the player picked one of three whackers (Nuke-Lele, Pan-Demonium, or Mallet of Malice), pointed the phone camera at the sky to find a piñata such as Polly or one of the 20-plus named piñatas in the Armada, and struck it to win free data, with different piñatas appearing at different times and places to draw players back daily.
