Objective

The LEGO Group sought to establish a persistent, free-to-play presence within Fortnite's UEFN ecosystem, offering branded experiences to reach younger audiences and their families. By creating kid-safe, engaging gameplay tied to LEGO's core brand themes, the company aimed to deepen engagement with a new digital audience while maintaining brand safety through parental controls.

Solution

LEGO developed two distinct UEFN experiences under the LEGO Islands banner: LEGO Raft Survival, a multiplayer co-op game where players navigate Blackbeard-themed pirate waters, dodge cannon fire, and collect wood and treasures to construct rafts; and LEGO Obby Fun, a brick-built obstacle course created by LEGO's actual set designers, featuring randomized platforming challenges across LEGO Friends, City, NINJAGO, and DREAMZzz themes. Both experiences were built using Unreal Editor for Fortnite and took 18 months to develop, offering solo and cooperative gameplay modes. The islands were launched as free, always-accessible content across all Fortnite platforms with integrated Epic Games parental controls.

Results

LEGO Fortnite mode achieved 2.45 million concurrent players on December 9th, 2023, with Fortnite's overall concurrent players reaching 7.6 million that day. YouGov BrandIndex data showed Fortnite's Net Buzz score increased from 5.5 to 8.3 following the LEGO collaboration announcement.
