Objective
KFC Australia sought to raise awareness of their snack menu and drive sales among young adults aged 16–24. By creating a branded mobile game, the campaign aimed to increase engagement during specific peak hours (2–5 PM daily) and incentivize repeat store visits through exclusive digital rewards.
Solution
KFC launched a free mobile app featuring an 18-level game where players guided popcorn chicken characters through three themed environments, helping them escape Professor Snackbot's lab and reach The Colonel's safe zone. The game was only playable during 2–5 PM daily windows to maximize engagement and drive afternoon traffic to KFC stores. Players earned stars at each level and could redeem daily prizes—2,500 free KFC snacks distributed per day—at any of Australia's 600 KFC locations via in-app vouchers. The app integrated Facebook Connect, allowing players to share achievements and unredeemed prizes with friends. The game became the #1 app in the Australian app store.
Results
KFC Australia's mobile advergaming campaign from October 8 to December 2, 2013 achieved 300,000 downloads in 6 weeks, reaching 7% of Australia's population. The campaign delivered a 20% sales increase over four weeks with equivalent reach of 4.85 million TV commercial impressions.
