Slot machine game

Also called slot game, branded slot machine, slot machine promotion, spin to win slot, fruit machine game, one-armed bandit game

A slot machine game, in brand marketing, is an instant-win mechanic dressed as a casino slot: the player pulls a lever or taps spin, reels of brand symbols roll, and three matching symbols reveal a prize. Brands use it to turn a purchase, sign-up or daily visit into a few seconds of suspense.

How it works

The look comes from the casino. Wikipedia credits Charles Fey of San Francisco with the three-reel Liberty Bell; the lever on early machines gave slots the nickname "one-armed bandit", and in British English they are fruit machines.

The brand version keeps the reels and drops the stake. A code from an order, a registration form or a daily visit earns a spin, and the reels carry the brand's own symbols: products, a mascot, a logo. One pull or tap sets them rolling; three matching symbols mean a prize and instructions to claim it.

In a casino, a random number generator picks each result. In a promotion, as in any instant win game, the prize engine decides and the reels only display it: on the promotions platform Easypromos, the organiser assigns prizes by odds or at scheduled moments and caps the rounds per player.

Where brands use it

In the library, slots appear wherever a quick reward can follow a transaction or a sign-up. Retailers use them to collect marketing permissions: Finnish discount chain Tokmanni moved its contests off Facebook, where it could not collect them. Food and drink brands tie a spin to an order, as Bagelstein did with its limited Crazy Menu. The Coop Denmark app has rotated a slot pull with scratch cards and wheels.

Anniversaries suit it too (see company anniversary games): Ocean Casino Resort ran one for its fifth birthday, and Somfy dressed always-winning reels for its TaHoma hub's anniversary. A slot can also be one stop in a longer game, like the one-armed bandit in Groupe BPCE's recruitment game. Browse by goal: sales and lead generation.

When it fits

Choose a slot when one action, such as a purchase, a registration or a daily visit, earns an instant reward. There is nothing to learn and a spin takes seconds, but the casino look points it at adults (see below). Every symbol on the reels can be a product, as Bagelstein's bagels and desserts were.

Plan the prize table first: Easypromos recommends scheduled moments for high-value prizes with few units. A cap per player, such as Ocean Casino Resort's one entry a day, brings people back without unlimited spins.

A platform template can be rerun without an agency build: according to Playable, Tokmanni runs a version several times a year.

When not to use it

Skip it when the product needs explaining: reels show symbols, not benefits, and a spin is over in seconds; a trivia game teaches more. To reward skill rather than luck, use a scored game with a leaderboard.

Keep it away from children. Reels are gambling imagery: in October 2025 the UK government proposed making it an offence to let under-18s play even 10p-stake "cash-out" slot-style arcade machines, because they resemble adult-only machines. For families, a memory game or a short arcade game carries a prize just as well.

Mind who may enter: Ocean Casino Resort's official rules limited its slot to people aged 21 or over and excluded anyone on New Jersey's gambling exclusion lists. A purchase requirement brings prize-promotion and lottery rules into play; check with counsel first.

Slot Machine — Tokmanni

Agency: Playable · Platform: Web

The Finnish discount retailer ran this game for seven days. Its headline asked players to spin three buckets in a row to win; a blue bucket character shared the reels with fruit, a horseshoe and a diamond. Players pulled the lever and saw at once whether they had won. To enter the prize draw, they filled in a short form and ticked a box for marketing consent.

Result: According to Playable, the seven-day campaign brought 4,800 unique registrations.

The BIG Game — Bagelstein

Agency: Drimify · Platform: Web

The bagel chain built the game to launch its limited Crazy Menu. A guest who spent the minimum on a Crazy Menu order received a code worth one spin. On the campaign site they entered it, pulled the lever and watched reels of Bagelstein food land. Most prizes were small menu items, such as a drink, a dessert or a side; one grand prize sent a winner on a weekend in New York.

Result: According to Drimify, the game reached a 79% engagement rate, meaning eight in ten participants bought from the menu and redeemed their code for a spin.

#OceanTurns5 Summer Digital Sweepstakes — Ocean Casino Resort (2023)

Agency: Drimify · Platform: Web

For its fifth birthday, the Atlantic City resort ran a branded slot on its website from 12 June to 4 September 2023, one entry per person or email a day. Each pull of the handle spun reels of birthday cakes, gift boxes and a cartoon wave and showed at once whether the player had won one of 255 small prizes, such as a wine tumbler. Three experience packages and $2,000 in cash went to draws. The sweepstakes has ended.

FAQ

Is a branded slot machine game gambling?

Usually not when nobody pays to play: a casino slot takes a stake, a brand slot hands out free spins. In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission says a free draw needs no licence, and a paid entry route needs a free one that is no more expensive and no less convenient. Rules differ by country, so check with counsel; our sweepstakes entry covers the basics.

Is a slot machine game the same as a social casino app?

No, though most top US search results for the term are casino and slot-game sites. Social casino slots such as Caesars Slots are played with in-game coins: the operator says you cannot win real money, and the game is meant for players aged 21 and over. A brand slot is a prize promotion, with real prizes, entry rules and a claim process.

Do slot machine games pay out?

Casino machines return a share of stakes as prizes, the "return to player". Britain's Gambling Commission says this is an average over many plays, not each play, and that there is no minimum. A brand slot has no stake, so it pays whatever the promoter stocks, sometimes a win on every spin, as in Somfy's 100% winning draw.
