Objective
During UEFA Euro 2012, Volkswagen created a competitive online penalty shootout game to capitalize on the Netherlands-Germany football rivalry. The campaign aimed to engage fans from both countries before the actual match, turning pre-match anticipation into an interactive competition where players could determine outcomes before the real fixture.
Solution
Das Interland was a cross-platform penalty shootout game playable on desktop (Flash via Adobe Air), tablet, and mobile devices (iOS and Android). Players from both nations competed in real-time through live matchmaking powered by socket servers. The game featured responsive shooting mechanics refined to minimize latency. Available on Facebook and mobile app stores, the top performer won a customized Volkswagen Up. The team used Adobe Air for unified cross-platform development, enabling simultaneous export to Flash and native iOS/Android applications.
Results
Over 600,000 games were played with 1.2+ million penalties taken. The mobile app reached the iTunes top 10 free downloads. The project earned FWA Mobile Site of the Day and Spinawards Game Gold.
