Objective

Paris's Philharmonie wanted to keep fans engaged in the off-season and build anticipation for the 9th edition of its Days Off festival (30 June–8 July 2018). The brief was to turn nine years of festival history into something people would actively replay and share, aimed squarely at the music obsessives who buy the tickets.

Solution

On its own site, the player picks one of six themed blind-tests — Made in France, Pop Star, This is England!, Sing a Song, Pianorama, and Flower Power — each built from tracks by artists who'd played the Days Off stage since 2010. Each quiz plays a clip and asks the player to name the artist by ear, drawing from a pool of 175 performers and over 280 tracks across the six categories. No sign-up or install: the player just listens, answers, and moves to the next clip until the quiz ends and their result is shown. Through July 2018, finishing well was entered into a prize draw; after that, players kept playing purely for the score.

How it plays

6 steps
  1. 1

The player lands on a standalone microsite for PopCorn Days Off, branded as a challenge for eclectic music lovers, and is invited to take on six musical quizzes.

  2. 2

The player picks which of the six themed quizzes to start with — among them Made in France (the French festival scene across nine editions), Pop Star, This is England!, Sing a Song, Pianorama (artists built around the piano), and Flower Power — each introduced with a short description of its theme.

  3. 3

Inside a quiz, the player runs a blind-test loop: listening to short music clips and identifying them, drawn only from the roster of artists who have played the Days Off festival since 2010.

  4. 4

The full game draws on a shared pool of 175 artists and over 280 tracks spread across the six quizzes, so no two themes repeat material.

  5. 5

After finishing a quiz, the player returns to the hub to tackle the remaining ones, with the stated goal of clearing all six musical quizzes.

  6. 6

Prizes were available for participants only until July 2018; after that the game stayed online with no reward on offer, playable purely for bragging rights.
