Objective
Volkswagen of America was returning to the international auto show circuit at LA Auto Show 2022, timed with the FIFA World Cup and its sponsorship of the US men's national team, and needed its stand to hold visitors' attention on a loud, distraction-heavy show floor. The brief called for a game that felt fun and competitive while quietly building brand and product knowledge, and that rotating brand ambassadors could run session after session with no training.
Solution
Visitors scan a QR code off the stand's LED wall, land on a mobile site, type in their initials, and drop into a live lobby with everyone else in the room. A host launches each round from an iPad, and multiple-choice questions about VW's history and vehicles appear on the visitor's phone the instant they appear on the giant screen overhead, with a countdown running — the faster the correct answer, the more points earned. A leaderboard updates on the LED wall in real time, turning the stand into a small arena where players can watch their name climb as onlookers gather. Once a question's combined score hits 50, one wrong answer drops off both screens, sharpening the final push. Each session closes with the top scorers called up to collect VW merch.
Results
Thousands of people came through the activation on opening night alone.
- 1
A visitor at the Volkswagen booth scans a QR code shown on the stand's LED wall with a phone camera, which opens the game's mobile site with no download required; the player then enters their initials, which will identify them on the shared leaderboard.

- 2
The player waits in a lobby screen while the booth fills with other participants; a live host running the session from a tablet starts the match, sending every phone, the LED wall, and the host's own display to the first question in sync.
- 3
Each round, a multiple-choice question about Volkswagen history, brand trivia, or product facts appears at the same time on the player's phone and on the LED wall, and the player taps their chosen answer on the phone screen.
- 4
Each question carries a countdown score that starts at 100 and drops toward zero, so answering faster earns more points; if the score falls to 50 before an answer is given, a 50/50 lifeline removes one wrong option and leaves a choice between two.
- 5
When time runs out, the correct answer is revealed on both the phone and the LED wall, along with the points the player earned for that question.
- 6
A running leaderboard of players' initials is displayed on the LED wall for the whole booth to see, including bystanders who aren't playing, while the host controls the pace, advancing the group through one question after another.
- 7
At the end of the session the LED wall shows an awards moment for the top scorers, who receive Volkswagen merchandise, and the host then closes out the match and launches a new session for the next group.
