Objective
Nike aimed to engage Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers in the metaverse by creating an accessible, free-to-play virtual sports experience that removes cost barriers to athletic participation. The campaign positioned Nikeland as both a brand experience and a platform for younger, digitally native audiences to explore sports in a lifestyle context within environments they already inhabit.
Solution
Nikeland was built as a free-to-play virtual sports park within Roblox, inspired by Nike's headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The core experience featured three games—tag, floor-is-lava, and dodgeball—alongside a digital showroom where players virtually tried on Nike products including Air Force 1 and Air Max styles. Players activated sports superpowers by shaking their mobile device via accelerometer integration, marking first-ever gameplay mechanics of this scale on Roblox. A reward system distributed blue ribbons and gold medals to unlock virtual products and in-game materials. The platform included a creator toolkit enabling users to design custom mini-games, and Nike complemented the launch with a Snapchat AR lens tied to its New York House of Innovation location.
Results
Over 9 million visitors accessed Nikeland on Roblox, and the project gained significant press attention in major publications including Hypebeast, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR.
