Objective

Fanta wanted its first-ever global campaign built entirely around gaming, using Xbox's 25th anniversary to turn a limited-edition can and bottle run into a gateway to five major game franchises. The goal was to move the special-edition packaging through retail and e-commerce across more than 60 markets, drive sign-ins to Coca-Cola accounts linked with gaming accounts, and give players a reason to keep coming back with a capped weekly reward.

Solution

A shopper scans the QR code printed on a limited-edition Fanta can or bottle and lands on a market-specific page inviting them to unlock in-game rewards and a shot at Xbox prizes. After signing into their Coca-Cola account, they choose one of three browser challenges, each built around a different game: cracking a decryption puzzle to free a hidden Fanta stash in Extract the Cargo, sneaking past an automated security system without triggering a lockdown in Survive the Sweep, or racing to break a curse before an eclipse peaks in Shatter the Spell. Clearing the challenge lets the player link the matching game account and claim a franchise-specific item — Halo armor, a World of Warcraft mount, a Call of Duty calling card and XP token, a Diablo IV portal effect, or a Forza Horizon 6 car skin — while also entering a sweepstakes for Xbox consoles and controllers. Players can repeat the process once a week for a new reward, up to five in total; in the UK, uploading a purchase receipt offers an additional way to earn sweepstakes entries.

How it plays

9 steps
  1. 1

The campaign starts at retail: players buy a limited-edition Fanta Xbox bottle or can, decorated with art from Call of Duty, Halo, World of Warcraft, Diablo IV or Forza Horizon 6 (or the new Fanta Crimson flavor), and scan the on-pack QR code to unlock a set of browser-based Xbox challenges.

  2. 2

The QR code opens a market-specific Fanta landing page promoting in-game rewards and an Xbox prize draw; players must log into or create a Coca-Cola account before they can play.

  3. 3

Players pick one of three "Fanta Rewards Chest" mini-game challenges to attempt.

  4. 4

Each challenge is a short themed puzzle framed as a race to a hidden chest: Extract the Cargo has players work a decryption interface to reach an activation code in an underground base; Survive the Sweep is a stealth challenge where detection triggers a base lockdown and a failed attempt; Shatter the Spell is a timed challenge to lift Mephisto's curse before an on-screen eclipse peaks.

  5. 5

After clearing a challenge, players link the game account tied to their chosen reward — Xbox/Microsoft for Halo or Forza, Activision for Call of Duty, or Battle.net for Diablo IV and World of Warcraft.

  6. 6

Players choose and receive a franchise-specific in-game item, such as Spartan armor in Halo, a mount in World of Warcraft, a calling card and XP token in Call of Duty, a town portal effect in Diablo IV, or a Fanta-liveried car in Forza Horizon 6; the reward arrives as an emailed code or directly in the linked account and is redeemed on that game's own platform.

  7. 7

Rewards are capped at one per week and five per player for the whole campaign, so players return repeatedly to keep unlocking items; each completed challenge also earns an entry into a sweepstakes for physical Xbox hardware and prizes, including a trip to BlizzCon.

  8. 8

In the UK, a parallel non-gaming path lets players upload a Fanta receipt to collect points and enter a separate draw for Xbox consoles and controllers.

  9. 9

In Los Angeles, the promotion extends offline: for four days Xbox and Fanta turn an AMC cinema into a walkthrough experience themed around Diablo IV's world of Sanctuary.
