Objective

Banque Populaire wanted to mark 25 years backing international sailing races, not with another anniversary statement but with something its audience could actually experience — retracing the moments that built the bank's reputation in the sport. The push doubled as social content for the bank's sailing sponsorship platform during the 2014 season.

Solution

The player is handed a sailing boat and a world map dotted with real places and events from Banque Populaire's 25 years in ocean racing, and steers from point to point uncovering that history as they go. Other players' boats are visible on the same map in real time, so a session can turn into a passing encounter: hail a nearby sailor to trade a greeting, or drop a message in a bottle for someone else to find further along their own route. Progress is marked by collecting medals — more than ten in total — as new stops are reached. It all runs straight in the browser, no download, alongside the bank's sailing site and social channels.

How it plays

7 steps
  1. 1

The player enters a standalone site inside Banque Populaire's sailing section, invited to rediscover 25 years of the bank's ocean-racing history through play rather than text.

  2. 2

The player is given a sailboat and steers it in the browser, with no install required, plotting a route across a world map from point to point.

  3. 3

Along the route, the player encounters historical milestones of Banque Populaire's sailing sponsorship, placed as points of interest to discover.

  4. 4

The world is shared and persistent: other players are sailing the same map at the same time, and routes cross paths with theirs.

  5. 5

A "S'exclamer" button lets the player hail other sailors encountered along the way, chatting with them directly or simply signaling excitement.

  6. 6

A "Jeter une bouteille" button lets the player toss a message in a bottle into the sea, to be found later by another participant sailing the same waters.

  7. 7

Exploring and uncovering the history earns the player medals, with more than ten different ones to collect.
