Objective

Nike sought to deepen engagement with gaming audiences and bridge virtual and physical sneaker culture by leveraging Fortnite's massive user base. The campaign was anchored to Air Max heritage and designed as part of a multiyear strategic partnership with Epic Games, creating opportunities to drive brand affinity and merchandise sales across both digital and physical channels.

Solution

Nike built Airphoria, a custom island experience within Fortnite using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) technology, developed in partnership with Beyond Creative studio. The island featured themed zones including Station 97, Shoebox Tower, and Museum Max centered around 'the ultimate sneaker hunt'—players explored to discover five iconic Air Max Grails (Air Max 1 OG, 97, TW, Scorpion, and Pulse) suspended above the city. Players could purchase Airphoria character outfits (Airie and Maxxed Out Max) via the Fortnite Item Shop, earn free cosmetics (Air Max 1 '86 Back Bling) after 10+ minutes of play, and unlock exclusive .SWOOSH platform achievements (for US-based players aged 13+). Simultaneously, Nike released a limited Airphoria-inspired physical merchandise collection on nike.com in North America, creating a direct link between in-game activation and real-world purchasing.
