Objective
Vodafone Germany launched Buffer Busters to address a key consumer perception issue: the belief that buffering slows down networks. The campaign gamified the solution by casting network buffering as virtual 'Buffer Monsters' that players could hunt and eliminate, turning a technical frustration into an engaging mobile AR experience that drove brand engagement and store visits.
Solution
Buffer Busters was a location-based augmented reality mobile game where players hunted virtual monsters causing network slowdowns across German territory. Players used AR technology on their smartphones to locate and capture Buffer Monsters in designated 'infested areas' throughout the country. Defeated monsters were deposited at Vodafone retail stores or online in exchange for virtual points and badges. The campaign promised three lifetime mobile plans as top prizes for engaged players, combining digital gameplay mechanics with physical retail touchpoints.
