Objective
NFL wanted to build fandom with Gen Z and Alpha audiences who live on Roblox rather than in front of a TV, giving them a hands-on way to learn the league's teams, players and storylines instead of just watching them. Two seasonal activations had a sharper commercial job: driving tune-in for Nickelodeon's Christmas Day broadcast and its first-ever Super Bowl telecast. The platform also let the league reach fans outside the US and showcase partners like Intuit and Warner Music Group.
Solution
Players jump into Super NFL Tycoon free on any device and take over a franchise from scratch: laying out a stadium and training facility, picking a favorite NFL team to brand their club around, and working through quests and mini-games that unlock official NFL x Roblox gear for their avatar. Twice a year the same loop broke out of the game's walls — during Nickmas and the Super Bowl LVIII activation, a single quest chain started in Super NFL Tycoon and continued across five other Gamefam titles, from SpongeBob Simulator to Car Dealership Tycoon. The hub for the Super Bowl phase was Bikini Bottom itself, redressed with banners, billboards and a new football stadium and tailgate zone where SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy stood around in game-day outfits. Along the way players answered trivia questions predicting the match outcome, and finishing the full cross-game chain earned a grand-prize reward.
Results
The Nickmas-to-Super Bowl LVIII activation drove 75 million+ visits across 29 days of branded experience, generating 985 million+ minutes of engagement and 343 million brand engagements. Players completed 5.4 million quests, answered 228,000 trivia questions and redeemed 210,000 virtual merchandise items. The Nickmas leg alone drew 31.3 million gameplay sessions and 440 million minutes over 12 days, and the Christmas Day broadcast it supported pulled 29 million+ viewers — the most-watched NFL Christmas game since 1989 — while the Super Bowl LVIII telecast it supported averaged 123.4 million viewers. The earlier Saweetie concert activation added 7.5 million+ visits in its first week. Over its two-year run, Super NFL Tycoon logged 22,531,346 total visits, 53,198 favorites and a 90.07% approval rating (33,219 to 3,663).
- 1
The player opens Super NFL Tycoon on Roblox for free, on phone, tablet, PC, or console, with no purchase and no broadcast subscription required.
- 2
At the start, the player picks a favorite NFL team, and that team's branding then carries across everything the player builds in the game.
- 3
The core loop is a tycoon simulator: the player constructs a stadium and a training facility, expanding the franchise and watching the club grow over time.
- 4
At the training facility, the player runs activities such as working out on gym equipment and kicking footballs, and can invite friends to join the team; periodically, Game Day challenges open matchday tests that put the stadium to use.
- 5
Every eight minutes, a gift icon tied to sponsor Intuit appears onscreen as a "tax refund"; collecting five of them, roughly 40 minutes of play, unlocks a reward.
- 6
A quest line runs alongside this, leading the player toward official NFL x Roblox accessories that can be worn on the avatar across the wider Roblox platform.
- 7
In February 2023, the game hosted a one-time crossover event: a virtual Super Bowl LVII concert by Saweetie, promoted through portal ads on the Roblox homepage.
- 8
The December 2023 "Nickmas" event layers a holiday, TMNT-themed crossover across four Roblox games at once — Super NFL Tycoon, TMNT Battle Tycoon, Easy Obby, and Car Dealership Tycoon — handing out rewards per game and a bonus for completing all of them, including an exclusive helmet and pizza-cannon accessory, plus a 24-hour trivia event held on Christmas Day.
- 9
The February 2024 "Super Bowl LVIII: Live from Bikini Bottom" event spans the same cluster of games: the player enters through a redecorated SpongeBob Simulator, takes quests from SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy, answers prediction questions, recovers stolen items in TMNT Battle Tycoon, runs a themed obstacle course in Easy Obby, watches babies compete for a team spot in Twilight Daycare, and returns to Super NFL Tycoon for a Super Bowl celebration with limited-time mini-games.
- 10
Completing these event chains earns limited wearables and virtual merch, with grand prizes like a golden SpongeBob helmet or a jet-pack cosmetic; following the game's closure announced February 2, 2025, visitors are redirected to NFL Universe instead.
