Objective
IKEA wanted to plant its home-storage expertise inside gaming culture rather than just advertise around it. Skyrim players have joked for roughly 15 years about the game's carry-weight limit and the clutter that piles up in their in-game homes, so IKEA built an actual fix into the game itself. The push was framed as extending IKEA's Democratic Design thinking into virtual spaces where people already spend their leisure time.
Solution
Players download KALLAX Storageborn for free from Skyrim's in-game Creations menu on PC or Xbox. Once a player gets overloaded with loot, an emissary shows up and sends them to a hidden Dwemer furniture store, where they assemble a KALLAX shelving unit that springs to life and starts talking, voiced by Matt Berry. From then on the shelf travels with the player, automatically gathering nearby loot, tidying their homes, and visibly holding items on its shelves; it can be summoned anytime with a new Dragon Shout that sounds like "IKEA." A second quest has players track down heirlooms to restore the shelf's memories, leading them through a clutter-filled Nord archive and into a boss fight against a Clutter Golem. Along the way the brand turns up as running jokes built into the game's lore: a giant Allen key doubles as a weapon, and a meatball-shaped helmet turns up as loot.
- 1
Players download KALLAX Storageborn for free from Skyrim's in-game Creations menu or the Bethesda Creations website, on PC and Xbox, with PlayStation listed as coming soon.
- 2
The add-on's quest starts automatically during a normal playthrough once the player becomes over-encumbered, triggering a visit from an emissary who directs them to Storereach, an abandoned underground Dwemer furniture workshop.
- 3
Inside the dungeon, the player collects the parts needed to build a KALLAX shelf and assembles it with a magical Allen key, bringing the shelf to life as a talking companion voiced by Matt Berry.
- 4
KALLAX follows the player through the world with comic animations, storing extra items the player places in it on its shelves as it travels; it does not occupy the regular follower slot, and its storage capacity grows through upgrades.
- 5
Players can summon KALLAX at any time with the Dragon Shout 'AYE KEY YAH', even when it is not the active companion.
- 6
Once fully upgraded, KALLAX automatically gathers nearby loot on its own; calling on it during combat raises the player's carry weight rather than attacking enemies, and at home it tidies the player's clutter in a single action.
- 7
A follow-up quest sends the player after heirlooms that restore KALLAX's lost memories, leading to a second dungeon, the Agglomerated Archives, a Nord site overrun by animated clutter that reveals the shelf's origin.
- 8
At the end of the archive, the player fights a boss made of household junk, the Clutter Golem.
- 9
Clearing the add-on's quests rewards the player with new gear and joke items, including the Allenblade (a giant Allen key), the Meatball Helmet, meatball food, the Staff of Assembly, Svalinn's Smärtstoppare, KALLAX armor, and a Conjuration spell.
