Objective

Verfora, the OTC brand born from Vifor Consumer Health's rename, needed to introduce its new name to the market and make everyday complaints — headaches, colds, allergies, fever — easy to recognize on the shelf. Turning each ailment into a named monster gave the rebrand a face and gave the pharmacy counter a reason for shoppers to stop, pick up a card, and keep engaging with the brand after they left the store.

Solution

At the pharmacy or drugstore, shoppers pick up a set of collectible memory cards, each printed with one of the ailment monsters — Kopfus Klopfus for headaches, Schnupfus Maximus for colds, Pollus Juckus for allergies, Fiebrus Plagus for fever. Opening the free app and pointing the camera at a card triggers an AR scan: the monster lifts off the card and animates in 3D, jumping around the room on screen. Scanning new cards unlocks extra content, including selfie stickers of the monsters, which players use to snap a photo of themselves alongside the creature they just found. The selfie uploads through the microsite verfora-selfie.ch to enter a photo contest for a travel voucher. The same site offers a quick browser version of the memory game, lets players meet each monster and its matching product, and includes a pharmacy locator for finding where to pick up cards.

How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The campaign introduces players to a cast of colored monsters with Latinized names, each representing an everyday ailment such as headache, cold, allergy, or fever, through national TV spots and digital ads.

  2. 2

Players pick up a set of collectible "memory" cards featuring the monsters from a point-of-sale display at a participating pharmacy or drugstore, or use a store locator on the campaign website to find a nearby participating outlet.

  3. 3

Players download the free VERFORA companion app for iOS or Android.

  4. 4

Players point the app's AR scanner at a physical card, and the printed monster comes alive as a 3D animation that jumps around the player's room.

  5. 5

Scanning each new monster unlocks additional in-app content, such as selfie stickers, which drives players to collect and scan the rest of the set.

  6. 6

Players switch to a selfie mode, photographing themselves with the monsters applied as AR stickers, then upload the shot through the microsite verfora-selfie.ch to enter it in a prize draw for a travel voucher.

  7. 7

Players also play a standard memory-matching game with the monster cards, either physically at home or in a browser version on the campaign website, racing to clear all the pairs.

  8. 8

The campaign website doubles as a companion hub, profiling each monster alongside its matching VERFORA product, with the character Schnupfus Maximus commenting on the player's clicks.
