Objective
UrbanDaddy created an interactive installation for the E2NY Music and Arts Festival 2011 to attract attendees through a novel brand experience. The installation combined competitive cycling mechanics with generative visual design, offering participants real-time, speed-responsive entertainment that encouraged social competition.
Solution
Red Paper Heart designed a head-to-head stationary bike racing installation inspired by Goldsprints, where riders competed in 60-second races. Each cyclist's speed controlled dynamically projected visual environments featuring forests, foxbears, and orbs; faster riders unlocked additional environments and space scenes. The system used Arduino-based bikes on modifier rollers connected to a central server running three synchronized openFrameworks applications, combining pre-rendered and live graphics. Participants raced against friends, enemies, and strangers, receiving real-time speed feedback through environmental progression.
