Objective
EE, the UK's leading telecom company, sought to showcase the real-world capabilities of their 5G network and differentiate their brand through a cutting-edge technology experience. By hosting the world's first 5G-powered AR foosball tournament at the iconic Wembley Stadium in April 2021, EE demonstrated ultra-fast network speeds and low latency in a high-profile sporting context, driving engagement with their customer base and positioning themselves as a technology innovator.
Solution
EE partnered with UNIT9 and Samsung to transform Wembley Stadium's pitch into a real-time AR foosball table, accessible via a custom mobile app on Samsung Galaxy S21 5G devices. Two celebrity teams competed live at the stadium: Team Aqua (Gareth Southgate, Yungen, Ugo Monye, Fara Williams, Elz the Witch) vs. Team Yellow (Peter Crouch, Joe Cole, James Haskell, Chelcee Grimes, Lia Lewis). The campaign ran as a Twitter contest from April 15-19, 2021, where EE customers could engage by liking and commenting to win prizes including a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G device and meet-and-greet opportunities with the celebrity participants. The tournament itself took place on April 26, 2021, at Wembley, with Peter Crouch's team emerging victorious.
