Objective
Orange UK needed to sell the social angle of the Motorola DEXT, its first Android handset built around syncing with Facebook, MySpace and Twitter — an idea easier to feel than to explain. Building a quiz around each visitor's own friends turned that abstract pitch into something personal, while tying entry to a daily phone giveaway gave people a reason to sign in with real account details.
Solution
Players arrive at friendometer.orange.co.uk and are greeted by an animated, voiced host who asks them to connect a Facebook, MySpace or Twitter account. From there the site pulls real details out of the player's own friends list and turns them into ten trivia questions — whose photo is this, which friend is the oldest, who's got the biggest photo album, who's supposedly still single. Because every question is about people the player actually knows, guessing carries real stakes and a built-in urge to share the result. At the end, the player gets a score rating how well they really know their friends — and simply by playing, they're entered into that day's draw for a free phone.
- 1
The player arrives at friendometer.orange.co.uk, a branded Orange UK site built around an animated character and sound, inviting them to test how well they know their friends.
- 2
The player connects a Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter account; the site pulls photos, birthdays, relationship statuses, and friends' album sizes from that profile and uses them to build a personalized quiz.
- 3
The player answers ten questions built entirely from their own social graph: some show a photo from their feed and ask who is pictured, others ask factual comparisons among friends, such as who is oldest, how many are single, or whose photo album is largest.
- 4
After the tenth answer, the player receives a Friend-o-meter score rating how well they actually know their friends.
- 5
The player submits their details to enter Orange's daily prize draw held by phone among quiz participants.
