Objective

Cartoon Network UK needed to build excitement for a new season of Adventure Time among its existing fan base ahead of the premiere. Rather than run a standard trailer, the broadcaster wanted to hand fans the story itself, putting them in charge of a trip through the Land of Ooo instead of just watching one.

Solution

Once Upon an Ooo runs full-screen in the browser as a text-driven story set in the Land of Ooo, drawn in the show's own art style. The player reads through the tale, and at each fork picks one of the options on screen, sending the story toward a different kingdom and shaping how it unfolds from there. Along the way, the story drops the player into specific tasks — rescuing a character, jumping through time — before returning them to the next choice. There's no app to install and nothing to log into; the player just keeps choosing until the story reaches one of its endings.

How it plays

4 steps
  1. 1

The player opens the game at its own web address and lands in a full-screen, illustrated rendering of the Land of Ooo — not a page about the show, but the opening scene of a story the player takes part in.

  2. 2

The story unfolds as illustrated text, and at each fork the player picks from a set of options, choose-your-own-adventure style.

  3. 3

Each choice determines which kingdom of Ooo the player travels to next, so the route through the story's locations is assembled from the player's own decisions rather than fixed in advance.

  4. 4

Along the way the narrative hands the player discrete tasks embedded in the plot, including rescuing a character and a time-travel episode.
