Objective

The NFL wanted a way to stay in front of fans under 18 who live in persistent virtual worlds rather than in front of a TV, and to be the first major sports league with a permanent presence on Roblox. Launching around Super Bowl LVI let it ride the league's biggest annual spike in attention, with content updates timed to the NFL calendar afterward.

Solution

Players land in the hub of Central City, then head to their own plot to build and upgrade a stadium and concession stands that generate passive income over time. From there they open card packs to pull fictional players, slot them into offense, defense, and special teams, and trade duplicates with other users to fill out a roster and climb the leaderboard. A separate mode, Destruction House, drops players solo or with a party into a house they have to demolish with hammers, balls, and eggs before the clock runs out. Playing earns free items like a Super Bowl LVI cap, a Melon Head Rams accessory, and a Bengals "Who Dey" backpack, while a branded shop sells limited items such as a New Era Draft Cap on the side.

Results

Attracted more than 2.5 million unique users since its February 2022 launch, over half of them under 18; the experience logged 7,987,207 all-time visits and 45,323 favorites, with a peak of 5,081 concurrent players on February 10, 2022.

How it plays

9 steps
  1. 1

Players enter NFL Tycoon through Central City, a hub built around an NFL-branded plaza with team tents, housing, a league store, and a balloon booth. Walking into the hub automatically grants a free Super Bowl LVI cap to the player's avatar inventory.

  2. 2

Scattered throughout the hub are 56 hidden Wilson footballs; players explore Central City to find them all, and collecting the full set unlocks a commemorative Wilson Super Bowl LVI football.

  3. 3

Players move to their own plot and enter an edit mode where buildable stadium pieces are highlighted green when affordable and red when not. They construct core stadium structures first, then add concession stands whose level determines revenue, with money also accruing passively over time and through visits to the Destruction House mode.

  4. 4

A My Team menu organizes the roster into Offense, Defense, and Specialists position groups.

  5. 5

Players buy and open card packs featuring fictional players, with pricier packs raising the odds of pulling top-tier cards, then trade cards with other players to fill out missing roster positions.

  6. 6

The assembled roster competes in a match simulator, and climbing its leaderboard unlocks additional in-game rewards.

  7. 7

From the hub, players can teleport into the limited-time Destruction House mode, playing solo or in a party; inside, they're handed hammers, balls, and eggs to smash a house's contents within a time limit, earning money based on the value destroyed, plus a chance at free cosmetic drops like a Rams-themed head and a Bengals backpack.

  8. 8

During the real-world Super Bowl LVI broadcast window, the league's game-day commercial played inside the experience for players present in the world.

  9. 9

The in-experience NFL store sells limited-run cosmetics, releasing branded caps in staggered drops over time, including a free league cap and a full set of team caps.
