Objective

KoçNet was launching BiRi, a new ADSL brand, and wanted to introduce it without a hard-sell pitch. Rather than buying banner space, the brand built a game that would give existing KoçNet customers and prospective BiRi users a reason to spend time with the brand — pulling them onto its own site and keeping them there through play, not impressions.

Solution

The game opens straight in the browser on its own promo site, no sign-up required. The setup: a character named Birolcan gets frustrated with a bad internet connection, falls asleep at his computer, and wakes up trapped inside it — the player's job is to guide him back out. Using only the mouse, the player works through a run of physical puzzles, ten levels in total, each one harder than the last, with a later update adding five extra levels for players looking for a tougher challenge. Progress is the story: every level cleared is a step closer to freeing Birolcan, and the session ends when he finally gets out.

Results

The game logged over 1,000,000 plays in its first two months online, and the campaign site drew more than 100,000 visitors.

How it plays

5 steps
  1. 1

The player opens a standalone site, biribenikurtarsin.com, and starts playing immediately with no registration, login, or membership required.

  2. 2

The setup: a 3D character, Birolcan, runs into an internet problem, falls asleep at his computer, and wakes up trapped inside it — the player's goal is to get him out.

  3. 3

The player controls the game with the mouse, nudging and manipulating objects that obey a physics engine, so items fall, roll, and knock into one another.

  4. 4

The core loop is a sequence of physics puzzle levels set inside the computer world, each one harder than the last; clearing all of them frees Birolcan.

  5. 5

A later update added five new, more difficult levels beyond the original set, giving returning players extra levels to continue into.
