Objective
Hong Kong Green Building Week wanted its annual public-education push to land beyond a guided walk-through: the Hong Kong Green Building Council needed visitors to actually absorb how green buildings cut carbon and connect that to their own daily habits, not just tour six landmark buildings and move on.
Solution
Visitors sign up for an account on the campaign's mobile site and pick one of six featured green buildings to explore, either on an expert-led BEAM Pro tour or with an audio guide voiced by singer Terence Lam and radio host Bonnie Wong. Walking the building's route, the player stops at real green-design features and completes a matching "decarbonisation task" on their phone, answering prompts tied to what they're looking at. Some tasks run online before or after the visit, but most trigger on-site as the player moves through the building. Each completed task banks points, which carry a chance at prizes, and every player's progress adds to a running campaign-wide tally of decarbonisation steps.
Results
The game drew more than 1,000 participants, who together logged close to 180,000 "carbon-reducing steps" over the campaign week.
- 1
Players open the campaign site on a smartphone browser — no app install required — and create an account, which is needed to save tasks and points.
- 2
Players pick one of two formats: a guided tour with a scheduled expert-led session at one of three landmark buildings, or a self-paced audio tour at one of four other buildings, narrated by a singer and a radio host.
- 3
At each stop on the route, the player scans a QR code to unlock that location's audio or video segment along with a linked task.
- 4
The narration explains a specific green-building feature at that spot, and the player then completes a decarbonisation task tied to what is physically around them; these online and offline tasks are spread across six landmark green buildings and are worked through as the player visits each one.

- 5
Completing a task adds points to the player's account.
- 6
Accumulated points give the player a chance at campaign prizes, which is the incentive to visit more buildings and finish more tasks.
- 7
The audio-tour format stayed open for about a week after the campaign's official run, letting players return and pick up remaining tasks.
