Objective
At the height of the viral buzz around Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money" video, nss magazine's in-house studio nss factory built a browser tribute to ride the wave — turning someone else's pop-culture moment into traffic, dwell time, and a reason for readers to come back to the site.
Solution
The game loads straight in the browser on the magazine's site — no install, no sign-up. You type your name onto a dollar bill, then steer a pixel-art Rihanna like a classic Snake, gobbling up stacks and bags of cash to a chiptune remix of BBHMM, with her laugh dropped in as a sound cue. Power-ups — scissors, lightning, a ghost, a bomb — twist the run as you go. Beyond solo play, you can challenge a friend by invite code or get matched against a random opponent in a head-to-head duel, where a snail and ice add extra tactics. Runs end when you crash, and your dollar score lands on a public leaderboard, split between solo and duel tables.
Results
The solo leaderboard's top score stands at $104,775; the best 1-vs-1 duel score is $72,825.
- 1
The player opens the browser game, arriving at a pixel-art title screen for "#BBHMM - Bitch better have my money | SNAKE" while an 8-bit version of the track plays.
- 2
The start screen prompts for a name in a field styled as an oversized dollar bill.
- 3
Pressing "Play" leads to a mode-selection screen offering "Single Player" or "Multiplayer," a 1-vs-1 duel.
- 4
In Single Player, the goal is stated directly: collect as much money as possible, with the best score topping the leaderboard.
- 5
The core loop is classic Snake reskinned: the player steers a pixelated Rihanna around the field to pick up bills and money bags, each pickup triggering a laugh sound clip and pushing the dollar score higher.
- 6
Power-ups spawn on the field and can be read up on anytime via a "Help!" button: Scissors halves the player's own tail, Flash doubles speed, Ghost lets the player pass through themselves and the opponent, and Bomb is best avoided.
- 7
Multiplayer offers three ways in: "Challenge friend" generates a code to share, "Join challenge" enters someone else's code, and "Random challenge" queues for a stranger.
- 8
Duels add two opponent-targeting bonuses on top of the single-player set: Snail halves the rival's speed and Ice freezes them outright.
- 9
Whoever wins the duel adds the money collected during that match to their running total.
- 10
Scores post to public "Top Players" leaderboards, tracked separately for Single Player and 1-vs-1, listing nickname and dollar total; the result can be shared directly from the page via a tweet button.
