How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The player encounters the campaign through TV, OOH, radio, and creator posts built around a gold theme (gold plane dropping money, Mr. Monopoly, gold game pieces, the "Bigger Bolder Golder" tagline).

  2. 2

The player buys a participating McDonald's item in-restaurant, through delivery apps (Uber Eats, DoorDash, Skip The Dishes), or without purchase by mailing a stamped request envelope during the eligibility window, each yielding one or two game stamps on or with the packaging.

  3. 3

The player peels a stamp off the packaging to reveal two hidden game pieces underneath, each printed with either an instant prize or a collectible property/landmark name.

  4. 4

Instant-win pieces can be redeemed immediately in-restaurant for a food prize before the date printed on the piece, no app required. Collectible pieces are saved, optionally on a physical or printable game board, to complete matching sets tied to specific prize tiers (e.g., two landmark stamps for a car, four airport stamps for a trip).

  5. 5

The player logs into the McDonald's app with a MyMcDonald's Rewards account and enters or scans each stamp's 14-character code (up to 100 per day) before the entry deadline, unlocking a digital Bonus Play round.

  6. 6

In Bonus Play, the player taps "GO" to move a token across a 3D Monopoly board; landing reveals either a prize (food, Rewards points, partner offer, or a large cash prize) or, on a non-win, a draw ticket the player can assign to one of several big-prize drawings.

  7. 7

Entering codes also builds toward tiered "Peel Perk" rewards, unlocking a new partner discount or offer every five codes up to a maximum number of perks.

  8. 8

To claim a prize, the player answers a mandatory skill-testing question and, for physical stamp prizes, mails the stamps to a redemption centre by the specified deadline; all food and cash prizes have separate final redemption and draw dates.

Objective

Monopoly Golden Edition is McDonald's Canada's annual promo game reworked for the promotion's approaching 40th anniversary, meant to make a ritual Canadians already know by heart feel premium and newsworthy again. The core commercial lever is basket-size uplift: one more item on an order means one more stamp and one more shot at a prize. The relaunch also pushes the game into the McDonald's app, driving MyMcDonald's Rewards sign-ups and repeat visits, while refreshed prize partners add new value to the promotion.

Solution

Buying a participating item gets you a game piece on specially marked gold packaging; peel it back and there are two stamps underneath, each good for an instant prize or a collectible property piece. Every stamp carries a 14-character code, and typing or scanning that code into the McDonald's app sends your piece into Bonus Play, a 3D rendering of the Monopoly board where tapping GO sends your token around the board to reveal a prize. A non-winning code doesn't end the session empty-handed — it becomes an entry you assign to one of 11 gold-themed draws. Players can also keep collecting matching-colour property stamps toward a bigger prize, and racking up codes pays off separately: every five new codes entered unlocks a Peel Perk, a partner discount, for up to eight perks across 40 codes.

Results

The promotion's prize partner negotiations secured over $400 million in prizes, including seven new partners such as Nissan, Bombardier, Best Buy, and Ardene. About 106.6 million game pieces were produced, each carrying two stamps, with roughly a 1-in-5 chance of winning at the outset (mostly food prizes).
