Objective
KFC's U.S. sales had slipped for two straight years while newer rivals like Raising Cane's, Wingstop and Popeyes gained ground on bolder flavors. The brand remained beloved and recognizable, but felt safe and dated by comparison — the challenge was to make people believe again in the boldness of its chicken by having the brand act bold itself, recasting Colonel Sanders as an obsessive, exacting chef rather than a friendly grandfather figure.
Solution
It opens with a 75-second film, Obsession, following chef Matty Matheson through the kitchen; partway through, a QR code appears tattooed on his arm. Scanning it opens The11Secrets.com, where a grid of 11 icons works as both a puzzle menu and a progress tracker. From there the player rewatches the film frame by frame, hunting for anomalies hidden in the background — Morse code flashing in a kitchen grille, a barcode in plain sight, coordinates buried in a subtitle track, a cipher worked into the branches of a tree. Cracking any single puzzle yields a code word, which the player registers and submits on the site; whoever submits a given code first becomes a potential winner of 11 months of free KFC. Fans quickly pooled their solutions on Reddit and social media, turning the hunt into a shared, public decoding effort.
Results
KFC's U.S. transactions grew 2.0% in Q3 2025, the brand's first quarter of positive sales growth since 2023. Viewers spent an average of 8 minutes watching the Obsession film to find the secrets and crack the code, and all 11 prizes were claimed within 5 days of launch.
- 1
The campaign launches with a 75-second film, 'Obsession,' airing in theaters, on streaming, and during a national broadcast, with a full cut posted to YouTube; the film doubles as an ad and as the game's hidden entry point.
- 2
Players scan a QR code disguised as a tattoo on an actor's arm in the film, the single visible doorway into the game.
- 3
The QR code leads to a dedicated site showing a grid of eleven icons, each representing one puzzle and tracking which ones have been solved.
- 4
Players register with an email address before any code submission counts; entry is limited to one prize per person, though a single account can submit multiple codes.
- 5
The core loop has players rewatching the film frame by frame to spot visual anomalies hidden in props, on-screen graphics, and even technical video tracks; each of the eleven puzzles uses a different form of hidden encoding (Morse code, binary, a literary cipher, hidden text in an effect, a geographic reference, an esoteric programming language, embedded map coordinates, redacted text, and note-based ciphers) and decoding it yields a secret word.
- 6
Players enter a decoded word into the site's submission form; for each puzzle, only the first person to submit its correct code qualifies as a winner.
- 7
Players work the puzzles collaboratively off-platform, comparing frame analyses and theories on social media and a dedicated subreddit until the full set of eleven puzzles is cracked.
- 8
The eleven winners each receive a fixed-value prize of free product, and the promotion closes on a set date after all codes have been claimed.
