Objective

Warner Bros. launched Dunkirk WebVR to promote the 2017 summer blockbuster film 'Dunkirk' directed by Christopher Nolan. The experience was designed to embody three central themes—scale, suspense, and stakes—giving audiences an immersive, interactive narrative experience centered on the Battle of Dunkirk.

Solution

A cooperative two-player WebVR experience built in WebGL for cross-device accessibility (browsers, mobile, VR headsets). Act I (Beach) cast Player 1 as a guide leading an injured companion to rescue ships, while Player 2 scanned the sky for enemy aircraft, with audio warnings triggered by two-second gaze fixation on bombers. Act II (Sea) featured a gaze-controlled 'Marco Polo' variant where Player 1 operated a searchlight from a boat and Player 2 located it from the water, supported by NPC guidance. The entire experience relied on gaze-tracking and single-button controls, with 140+ spatial audio tracks throughout.

Results

No quantifiable engagement or business impact metrics were published. The campaign received seven industry awards, including a Site of the Month honor from Awwwards and scoring 8.04 on CSS Design Awards' Best Web VR Site category.
