Objective

Sportsbud, a young Swedish e-tailer of fitness wearables (Fitbit, Misfit, Mio, Pebble), needed a way to get people talking about the store while it was still finding its footing in 2013–2014. A free-to-enter shake contest let the brand borrow the vocabulary of the products it sold — shakes, calories, stamina — and hand out its own trackers as the prize.

Solution

You land on the challenge page and pair your phone to the screen as a controller, then shake it as fast as you can — or just mash an arrow key if you'd rather play at your desk — to race a running total against the current leaderboard leader. Your shakes translate into distance, calories, and stamina on screen in real time, so you can see exactly how you stack up while you're still playing. Each attempt is quick: shake, watch your position on the leaderboard update, try to edge past whoever's on top. The contest ran in rounds, each with its own closing date and its own prize, so whoever held the top spot on the leaderboard when a round closed took home that round's fitness tracker.

How it plays

6 steps
  1. 1

The player lands on challenge.sportsbud.se, a single-page browser game titled "Sportsbud challenge" ("sportsbud shake challenge"), where the current best time and its holder are displayed as the target to beat and a prize is named for beating it.

  2. 2

The player picks a control method: connect a mobile phone to the page over WebSockets and use it as a shake controller, or use the keyboard's arrow key instead.

  3. 3

During the timed run, a HUD tracks time to beat, a stamina meter, and running counters for shakes and calories; the player shakes the phone or repeatedly presses the arrow key to rack up shakes or keystrokes and finish faster than the current leader.

  4. 4

Each run posts a result to a shared highscore table (opened and closed via "Highscore"/"Close highscore" links) listing name, time, shake-or-keystroke count, and device used; the same player can appear multiple times after replaying.

  5. 5

The named prize is a clickable link straight to its product page in the brand's online shop, and a linked Terms & Conditions page names the organizer, confirms free entry with no purchase necessary, and explains that a winner is drawn from the highscore table with a set notification and prize-claim window.

  6. 6

The campaign runs in rounds, each with its own prize and closing date that resets the race for a new record; once a round ends, the prize slot reads "Contest over" and the leaderboard freezes on its final leader.
