Objective
With Fast X opening May 19, 2023, Universal wanted a way to pull fans out of trailer-watching and into the world of the film before they bought a ticket. The pitch was simple: prove you belong in the Fast Family.
Solution
The game opens straight in the browser on a dedicated site, no download or sign-in. It's an 8-bit top-down racer: your car (or Letty's bike) barrels forward while you swerve between lanes, dodging potholes, oncoming traffic and bombs, and grabbing NOS boosts, cash, checkered flags and Dom's cross pendant. Three stages carry you through the film's cities — Rio, Los Angeles, Rome — each with a different hero vehicle, and between stages the game cuts to trailer footage, Dom's "Let's race!" included, before dropping you back into the next leg.
- 1
The player opens a standalone browser site for the game, with no download or registration required, and is invited to prove they have what it takes to join the Fast Family before starting a race.
- 2
Each stage opens with a cutscene built from official trailer footage, ending on Dominic's line "Let's race!", which serves as the transition into the race.
- 3
In the race itself, an 8-bit road scrolls upward while the vehicle drives forward automatically; the player's only input is shifting sideways between lanes to dodge potholes, oncoming and passing cars, and bombs, while collecting NOS canisters, money, checkered flags, and Dominic's cross, which speed up progress along the track.
- 4
A stage ends when the player reaches the finish line, which advances them to the next city.
- 5
The three stages move through saga locations — Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, and Rome — each with its own track design, and each stage puts the player behind a different vehicle: Letty's motorcycle, Dom's car, and Dante's car.
- 6
Cutscenes of chases and explosions run between stages, tying the races into a story of Dante pursuing Dom's family.
