Objective
Red Bull launched its first National Flugtag event across five U.S. cities in September 2013. The campaign aimed to drive awareness, participant registration, and retail shelf presence by creating an interactive companion experience that brought the real-world flying competition into consumers' hands before the live event.
Solution
A cross-platform mobile game (playable on mobile, tablet, and desktop) distributed through a limited-edition Red Bull 4-Pack featuring a QR code and text-in code. Players designed customizable flying crafts by selecting cockpit, propeller, wings, and tail components, plus cosmetic details (facial hair, hats, neckpieces). Five city-themed backdrops (Chicago, Long Beach, Miami, Dallas/Ft Worth, Washington DC) featured culture-specific flying obstacles. The contest ran July–August 2013, with the winner's aircraft design actually built and flown off a 30-foot platform at the Dallas event on September 21.
Results
More than 1,200 applications were received for the National Red Bull Flugtag events, representing every state in the U.S.
