Objective

Netflix Germany needed to build anticipation for the German premiere of Zack Snyder's zombie heist film "Army of the Dead," and chose to do it by turning the film's own vault-cracking set piece into something fans could try for themselves. Launching it at the height of 2021's NFT boom was a deliberate hook for trade and entertainment press, earning the campaign coverage as Netflix's first crypto-art marketing push in the German market.

Solution

The browser-based microsite drops you straight into a casino basement, facing a giant vault door while zombies snarl and claw behind you. A voice over the radio tells you to work the vault's four dials slowly, listening for the faint click of each one landing — the zombie noise is loud enough to fight you for it, so cracking the combination is purely an ear game. A timer starts the moment you begin and stops the second all four dials are set. Whoever posts the fastest time across the four-day run wins a deleted scene from the film, personally chosen by Zack Snyder, delivered as an NFT.

Results

Over 50,000 visitors came to the site in its first three days, spending an average of six minutes each trying to crack the vault; the fastest successful run cracked all four dials in 11 seconds.

How it plays

6 steps
  1. 1

The player lands on a dark casino basement microsite, facing the giant Götterdämmerung vault door from the film, with a radio voice explaining the goal: crack the safe by turning its four dials.

  2. 2

The core mechanic is audio-only: there is no visual cue to the combination, so the player grabs each dial in turn and rotates it slowly, listening for the click that marks the correct position.

  3. 3

Zombie snarls and screams play over the lock sounds throughout, masking the clicks the player is straining to hear.

  4. 4

A running timer adds pressure for the whole attempt, and stops the moment the fourth and final dial clicks into place, fixing the player's completion time.

  5. 5

That time enters the player into a leaderboard contest running through 30 May 2021, and players can replay to beat their own best time before the deadline.

  6. 6

The single fastest time wins an unreleased deleted scene from the film as an NFT, which requires a crypto wallet to claim.
