Objective

Sony Pictures needed to reach Gen Z and Alpha audiences who sit largely outside the traditional movie-marketing funnel, by showing up inside a platform where they already play and socialize with friends. The push was timed to build cultural buzz ahead of Karate Kid: Legends' May 30, 2025 theatrical release, and to recast the classic franchise as something alive and interactive rather than archival.

Solution

Players drop for free into a Roblox experience built around the world of Karate Kid: Legends — New York streets, a rooftop dojo, the Victory Pizza shop. They train alongside Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han, unlocking and leveling up karate moves, then take those moves into PvP matches against other players. Weekly quests tied to the film's story hand out limited-edition cosmetics for their avatar, including a bonsai-tree head, a karate bandana, a Victory Pizza box backpack, and a popcorn-bucket trophy hat. The experience runs across console, PC, mobile, and tablet.

Results

In its first week, the experience drew over 1 million visits, with an average session length of 4 minutes and a 67% user rating. In-platform ratings later settled at 3,875 upvotes to 1,613 downvotes — 70.6% positive — as of October 2026.

How it plays

9 steps
  1. 1

Players launch the free Roblox experience on console, PC, phone, or tablet; no purchase is required, and the experience is available for a limited time only.

  2. 2

After spawning, players find themselves in the film's world, free to walk the streets of New York City and explore.

  3. 3

Players seek out mentors from the movie — Mr. Han, Daniel LaRusso, and Li Fong — and train with them across recognizable film locations, including a rooftop dojo and the Victory Pizza pizzeria.

  4. 4

The core loop has players learning karate moves, unlocking new strikes and powering them up, then drilling them on training dummies that break apart to award progress and level-ups.

  5. 5

As players level up, they grow stronger and gain access to tougher opponents known as masters.

  6. 6

Players enter combat against other players and against masters, applying the moves they've learned.

  7. 7

Progression is framed around preparing for the "5 Boroughs Karate Championship," the tournament the training builds toward.

  8. 8

Each week brings new quests themed around "Karate Kid: Legends," giving players a reason to return before the film's release.

  9. 9

Completing challenges rewards players with limited-time avatar items, including a bonsai-tree head, a Karate Kid bandana, a Victory Pizza box backpack, and a popcorn-bucket trophy hat tied to "Karate Kid: Legends."
