Objective
Lunchbox sells restaurant-management software — a practical, back-office product with little emotional pull on its own. To reach restaurant-industry insiders on their own terms, the brand built a game around a figure the industry actually reveres, giving people a reason to spend a few minutes with Lunchbox that had nothing to do with software, and a discount code gave that visit a payoff.
Solution
The game opens on a title screen where the player can toggle sound before starting. From there they play as a skeletal Anthony Bourdain wielding an axe, defending his kitchen from wave after wave of absurd attackers — Midtown finance bros, pool sharks, and mad-cow steaks stampeding in. Tapping and swinging fends off enemies as they close in, and the game flashes approving pop-ups like "you're on fire" to mark a good run. Survive the onslaught and the screen rewards the player with a discount code for Lunchbox merch; get overrun and it's a straightforward Game Over, inviting another attempt.
- 1
The game opens on a title screen with an intro animation, showing the Death Chef name and retro tattoo-style artwork; a sound toggle lets the player turn audio on or off before starting.
- 2
The player controls the game's protagonist, a skeleton version of chef Anthony Bourdain, armed with an axe and stationed in his kitchen.
- 3
In the core loop, the player fends off waves of attackers invading the kitchen — Midtown finance bros, pool sharks, and mad-cow-infected bulls — working to keep them from overrunning the space.
- 4
During combat, the game surfaces encouraging reaction cards with short hype text, such as "you're on fire."
- 5
A session ends in one of two ways: winning nets the player a discount promo code for Lunchbox merch, while losing sends them to a Game Over screen.
