Objective

BNP Paribas had bankrolled the most expensive European film ever made and needed more than a logo in the credits to show for it — a digital property that let the sponsorship reach beyond film buffs. The brand wanted fans living inside the Valerian universe months before the July 2017 premiere, building buzz, capturing entrants for its contest, and pulling back the curtain on production for the audience it had gathered.

Solution

You start with a mission briefing, then pick your co-pilot — Valerian or Laureline — before taking the controls of the ship Intruder. From there you fly a small planetary system of one main world and three moons, scanning surfaces for fragments of a scattered MoviePass and jumping through time to retrieve them, in short arcade runs that simply restart if you crash. On desktop you get full manual flight control over the system; on mobile the same hunt runs in a VR mode. Finishing a run funnels you into a contest entry, with winners later flown to the film's real post-production studios and a soundtrack recording session.

Results

The site drew 77,304 players, who spent an average of 1 minute 42 seconds in the game per visit. The contest pulled in 2,641 registrations between November 14, 2016 and January 9, 2017, and the campaign generated 82,318 social media engagements. 120 contest winners received access to the film's post-production work at Cité du Cinéma and to the soundtrack recording sessions with the Paris Philharmonic Orchestra.

How it plays

7 steps
  1. 1

The game opens on a mission briefing that casts the player as a cosmo-temporal agent tasked with recovering fragments of a MoviePass scattered across space and time.

  2. 2

The player picks a companion agent, Valerian or Laureline, who guides the mission from that point on.

  3. 3

The player takes command of the spacecraft Intruder inside a four-body planetary system — one large planet orbited by three moons — and flies between the worlds as the core movement.

  4. 4

On each of the three moons, the player scans the surface to pinpoint a MoviePass fragment, then triggers a time jump to reach that spot and retrieve it.

  5. 5

Controls are arcade-style and adapt across desktop, smartphone, and tablet; failing an episode restarts it on a die-and-retry basis.

  6. 6

Desktop players can switch to a version with full manual control of the planetary system, while mobile players can view the scene in VR mode.

  7. 7

Completing the mission lets the player enter a sweepstakes for a visit to the film's set and post-production studio.
