Objective

Nike .SWOOSH wanted the release of the member-exclusive Air Force 1 Low "404" to feel like an earned event for its internet-culture audience rather than another lottery drop. The remix pair, "404 ERROR," was capped at just 404 pairs, so Nike needed a way to hand out access that matched the effort the community puts into the platform and kept the shoe's story tied to the .SWOOSH experience itself.

Solution

Members arrive on .SWOOSH to find the whole storefront glitched out in a 404 theme, then launch Glitch Galaxy from the site. Playing on keyboard or by tapping the screen on mobile, they pilot an 8-bit spaceship through a field of glitching debris, steering around obstacles as retro sprites flicker past. Each member gets a single run — there's no restart once it's over. Finish the run, and you're in the pool for Exclusive Access to the "404 ERROR" remix, with an email confirming your spot arriving after the game closes.

Results

The first 4,000 .SWOOSH members to complete Glitch Galaxy qualified for Exclusive Access to the Air Force 1 Low "404 ERROR."

How it plays

6 steps
  1. 1

Registered members of Nike .SWOOSH find the platform's storefront taken over by the Air Force 1 Low "404" campaign, with the homepage and product pages styled as broken 404 pages that lead into the game. Glitch Galaxy launches directly in the browser from there, with no separate install, and runs on both mobile and desktop.

  2. 2

Controls adapt to the device: players steer by touch on mobile and with keyboard input on desktop.

  3. 3

The core loop has the player piloting an 8-bit spaceship through a glitch-themed, pixel-art retro space, with objects appearing along the flight path; contact with these objects determines whether the player makes it to the end of the run.

  4. 4

Each player gets exactly one attempt, with a defined start and finish and no replays; Nike records the outcome on its side.

  5. 5

Reaching the end "saves the Glitch" and places the player in a queue for Exclusive Access, granted to the first 4,000 players who finish the game.

  6. 6

The game closed on April 26, 2024, with qualifying players receiving a confirmation email within a day or two. On April 30, 2024, those players used their Exclusive Access to buy a numbered pair of the Air Force 1 Low "404 Error" through SNKRS for $175, from a run of 404 pairs.
