Objective
GE launched Ecomagination in May 2005 to reposition itself from an industrial conglomerate into an environmental-technology company, and needed a way to make that pitch land with ordinary consumers, not just trade buyers. The games were built to carry GE's eco-product message past the usual gloom of environmental messaging and make it entertaining instead.
Solution
The player lands on a cartoon island called Geoterra and chooses from five short arcade games, each built around one real GE technology. In Washer Derby they race using the mechanics of GE's efficient Profile Harmony washer; in Harness the Wind they work a wind turbine; in Go Loco they run a GE locomotive; other rounds put compact fluorescent bulbs and other efficient appliances to use. Playing each round well is what visibly cleans up or powers the island, and a session ends when the round wraps — no login or download, just pick a game, play it out, and move to the next. It all runs straight in the browser, so a link could be passed around or dropped into GE's ecomagination ads.
