Objective
Duolingo's 10th anniversary gave the brand a reason to show up where fan activity already lived: Roblox players were building unofficial Duo games and avatars without any encouragement from the company. Duolingo and Media.Monks wanted to earn brand love with a young gaming audience they'd never targeted, test whether a presence in virtual worlds could move the needle on registrations and subscriptions, and use a Decentraland landmark to keep the brand's daily-streak reminder alive in a new setting — all while crediting the fans rather than boxing them into a closed brand world.
Solution
Players spawn straight into Spanish or Vanish, a multi-level chase through a garden maze, an office and an arcade where Duolingo's owl, Duo, pursues them and occasionally halts the action to demand an English-to-Spanish translation before a lift will move on. Clearing stages pays out coins, but the 23 fan-built games from a week-long Game Jam pay two to three times more coins than Duolingo's own game, which pushes players out of the hub and into that community lineup to keep earning. Coins get spent in a shop on Duo-branded gear — a backpack, cap, onesie, mask, a pet owlet — some of which unlocks for free once enough coins are banked and stays equipped on the player's avatar in any other Roblox game afterward. Across the metaverse in Decentraland, visitors walking toward the Golf Craft club pass a two-story Duo statue topped with a billboard styled as one of the app's push notifications, nudging them to do their lesson.
Results
The Game Hub logged 4 million visits at launch, climbing past 9 million within a few weeks and topping 13 million over time, with players spending 60 million minutes inside Duolingo's language games. The 23 Game Jam titles alone drew 3 million visits. Branded virtual merch was collected more than 100,000 times and kept showing up on avatars across Roblox's wider catalog afterward. The campaign generated 15 million-plus views on user-generated social content, lifted YouTube searches for Duolingo by 30-40% over the month and by as much as 800% at its peak, and drove hundreds of Duolingo Plus promo-code redemptions within hours of launch.
- 1
Players find Duolingo Game Hub, a free Roblox experience published by Friends of Duo for the brand's 10th anniversary, and enter through the standard Roblox catalog and "Play" flow.
- 2
From the spawn point, the hub branches into a fan-game arcade, a merch shop, character meet-and-greet spots, and Duolingo's own game, "Spanish or Vanish."
- 3
In "Spanish or Vanish," the player is dropped into a themed maze and chased by the owl mascot Duo; the core loop is evasion — stay ahead of Duo and find the exit.
- 4
Progression runs through three successive chase stages — a garden maze, an office building, and a retro arcade — gated by elevators where the player must pick the correct Spanish translation of an English word or phrase to advance; getting caught triggers a parody Duolingo push-notification reminder.
- 5
Completed runs pay out coins, tracked in a hub-wide counter, but the game explicitly tells players that community-made games pay 2-3 times more coins than Duolingo's own game.
- 6
The arcade area offers 23 curated fan games from a community Game Jam (e.g. Duo Simulator, Lost Forest Obby); selecting one teleports the player in, and each fan game includes a mandatory teleport back to the hub.
- 7
Coins are spent in the hub's shop on Duo-branded cosmetics — backpack, snapback cap, onesie, mask, and an owl pet — that carry over to the player's avatar in other Roblox games.
- 8
Two items, the onesie and the snapback, are also handed out free once a player's lifetime coin total crosses roughly 3,000.
- 9
Outside the player's session, the hub doubles as a user-generated-content contest: Roblox developers download a free starter asset pack and, over a fixed seven-day window, build their own game solo or in teams of up to four.
- 10
To qualify, a submitted game must be playable, feature Duo and at least one pack asset, carry a "#duojam" name tag and a teleport back to the main hub, stay free, and ship by the contest deadline; accepted entries get hub placement, a shot at TikTok promotion, and a Duolingo Plus code, while developers keep monetization rights. Separately, in Decentraland, a two-story Duo statue holding a push-notification-shaped billboard greets visitors near the Golf Craft course.
