Objective
Coachella wanted its brand to live beyond the four days in Indio, reaching Fortnite's audience of 220+ million monthly players year-round. Turning the festival into a persistent island let fans who'd never set foot on the polo fields experience the grounds, and gave Coachella a shareable, playable presence to pair with a branded item-shop line during the two festival weekends.
Solution
Players type in the island code or find it in Fortnite's Discover tab and drop straight onto a recreation of the festival grounds. In the first version they wander a desert map with a day-night cycle, browse a merch tent, walk through an Art Park of real and newly made installations, and work through mini-games scattered across the map. The rebuilt version centers on a virtual Sahara Tent, where music-driven mini-games and artist-themed zones — starting with a Grimes takeover, then DJ Snake — sit alongside hidden rooms, including a Coke Studio remix room where players jam together using Fortnite's music-making tools. Outside the island itself, players can pick up timed Coachella quests for free rewards, visit a Coachella-branded Jam Stage with its own Ferris wheel and tower, or buy a limited-run outfit and emote bundle from the item shop.
Results
Coachella Island drew over 5 million players in its first week.
- 1
Players open Fortnite and reach the island through the Discover tab or by entering its code — a free-to-enter experience that does not require the battle royale mode.
- 2
Players spawn into a recreation of the Coachella festival grounds in Indio: polo fields, palm trees and desert mountains under a running day-to-night cycle, with real landmarks such as the Spectra tower and the Le Grande ferris wheel reproduced as walkable set pieces.
- 3
The island's hub is a virtual rebuild of the Sahara Tent main stage, surrounded by themed zones built around that year's headline artists, with the featured artist's world rotating over the festival window.
- 4
Players wander the Art Park, an open gallery of installations — some copied from the physical festival, some made only for the island — to view and pose with.
- 5
Players take part in music-based, beat-driven mini-games scattered around the map, playable alongside other visitors on the island at the same time.
- 6
Players can seek out hidden spaces, including a concealed Coke Studio 'Remix Room' and a sound studio where visitors use Fortnite's Patchwork tools to build and layer a track together.
- 7
A running quest line offers timed Coachella Quests — parkour challenges, mini-game runs and dancing tasks — released in two waves, one at the start of each festival weekend.
- 8
Completing quests earns free branded rewards and XP: a spray after the first quest, an emoticon after three, and in week two a lobby track after five, building toward a small cosmetic collection tied to the event.
- 9
The campaign extends beyond the island itself: Fortnite Festival's Jam Stage is redressed with Coachella landmarks and stocked with Jam Tracks from lineup artists to perform, matching cosmetics go on sale in the item shop for a fixed ten-day window, and during weekend two Coachella's YouTube livestream overlays the real Sahara Tent performance with an Unreal Engine AR layer for viewers who never enter the game.
