Objective
Ahead of Jupiter Ascending's theatrical release, Warner Bros. needed a way to build awareness and pull audiences into the film's world before they saw a trailer. Rather than tease the story, the studio wanted people to actually inhabit it — stepping into protagonist Caine Wayse's fight against the Abrasax dynasty.
Solution
You open the site on your desktop and land inside a first-person shooter built from the film's key scenes, playing as Caine Wayse as he battles his way through wave after wave of enemies, each level tougher than the last. Pair your phone with the browser session and it becomes your weapon: tapping the screen fires and reloads, while tilting the phone up raises your shield, so you're watching the action on the big screen but aiming and defending with the device in your hand. A run ends when you're overwhelmed, and your score lands on a leaderboard against other players.
- 1
The player loads cainesquest.jupiterascending.com in a desktop browser and the game runs directly in the page via WebGL/HTML5, with no install or plugin required.
- 2
Before starting, the player chooses a control method: standard desktop input, or pairing a smartphone to the browser session so the phone becomes a physical weapon controller.
- 3
The player takes on the role of Caine Wise and enters a level built around a key scene from Jupiter Ascending.
- 4
In first-person view, the player fights off waves of enemies; tapping the phone screen fires and reloads the weapon, while tilting the phone upward raises Caine's shield to block incoming attacks.
- 5
The player advances through a sequence of increasingly difficult levels, working toward the goal of fighting through the Abrasax clan's forces to rescue Jupiter Jones.
- 6
After playing, results are posted to a leaderboard showing the top players' scores.
